hi guys i have a 2000 4x4 2500 truck and i have a problem with the trans the truck has 160k the trans wil not downshift to first gear on its own , i have to shift it manually and then it shifts ok. the trans was resently rebuilt by the trans shop in el monte ca. and they have not been able to figure out why this is , the reason for the rebuild was this exact problem , they have tried 4other valve bodys and no luck , so the end result is i start in second gear every time unless i manually shift. can someone please help!!!!!

From a stop, does it start in first or a higher gear?

If it starts from a higher gear it may be in limp home mode. Turn the key off and restart. Did this help it ?

Has the line pressure been raised? Do you know what pressure it is running at? ( idle and in drive).

It's probably the pressure solenoid and sensor, These cost about $200 from the dealer and are easily changed after you drop the trannie pan. They bolt onto the bottom of the valve body. Change the filter while your at it. It's a messy job if you don't have a drain plug in the pan, which is another thing you should do when you have the pan off. You will need 8 or 10 qts of fluid if you don't save what you drain.

There's a Govenor Port on the passager side of transmission. You need to put a 0-100 psi gauge on it and see what the pressure is doing. Should really have a scanner on it also so you can tell if it the solenoid or sensor. One mile and hour should equal one psi of pressure on the gauge and scanner. If the gauge reads a few pounds at a stand still with the scanner. Replace the solenoid. If the scanner reads 0 psi and the gauge reads a few pounds. ( say anything over 2psi) replace the sensor. Some trannsmission shops replace this. some don't. Some don't have a clue how the trannsmission works, some do. Some know how the trannsmission works, they just screw you.
