Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Trans wont upshift when floored

For a long time, when this truck was floored, it wont wind out to 2500 RPM (governed speed) and just stop, not shifting until you lift throttle. Not really a problem, as I hire drivers, and this was a way to keep them from driving the truck past 3/4 throttle!



But now, it has gotten worse. Much past 1/2 throttle or less, and it will not upshift.



The kickdown cable is set properly, and is actually a little loose at idle. I am to the point of just taking the cable off.



Truck has 280,000 miles, and is all original transmission. Just changed fluid every 24000 miles, and is a tow truck in a trailer dealership, so dont tell me the all Dodge's have trans problems...



Even now, it does not slip, firm shifts, etc. But is is getting a little slow to go into gear at first start when cold outside.

At start up, you probably need to put the trans in neutral for about 20-30 seconds because of t/c drain back.

On the other, I bet you need to replace the governor pressure sensor and gov. psi solenoid. Cost ~$100/ea.

Make sure the return spring on the TV lever is still there and not broke.
 
Return spring (the one on the outside of th transmission) is in place. Not sure how hard it is to replace the other items, you mentioned, i will look in my manual

what did you find the problem to be ai have a full dtt upgrade and the other day i broke the nuetral saftey switch off and i replaced the switch and refilled the oil and now it wont shift without lettinhg off the throttle
 
I just adjusted the kick down cable looser, and just tell my drivers not to floor it. My DDT Full upgrade trans (in the other truck) has never shifted out of 2nd gear unless you lift throttle (and it has the 3000 RPM gove. kit, so it just sits at 3500 RPM) Problem is, "that" truck should never be floored anyway, too much power for every day pulling.



Since we are not racing, I just dont floor the trucks.



The other truck would not shift if the tach went over 1800 rpm, but the loose cable allows it to at least shift when it is 75% floored... .



I plan to re-build or re-place the trans in that truck this winter anyway. (Truck has 299,000 miles on the ORIGINAL Transmission, and pulls trailers 95% of the time!)
 
I have the same issue with my trans. , it drives me crazy, because I did buy mine to floor it, but now it is slipping in first after the burnout this weekend. It also has 300k on the original trans. I'm gonna order a master kit from suncoast.

WOW, that has to be some kind of record for a Dodge Stock-O-Matic :eek:



I thought my '98 was doing good with its virgin auto at 187,000 miles.
 
The shifting issue brings a few things to mind.

1. throttle cable to tight

2. valvebody malfunction (build-up of internal crud, warped due to overheat, worn out piston bores, weak or borken springs, stuck check balls or worn seperator plate)

3. airated fluid (over/under filled)

4. valve body internal/external leak, or loose mounting bolts.

5. stuck governer weights

6. loose fit-governer fluid lines



Hate to be a doom sayer, but it's time to start digging in and checking stuff.
 
Yeah, I'm Blind when it comes this stuff. That is why it intrigues me. I work on all other vehicles but when it comes to diesels or trans. There is much I don't know. .
