transfer case 271

I have problems with my dodge ram 2500 turbo diesel. My transfer case (271) broke driving down highway and i replaced with another one they told me it was same (which I really don't know now) the gears in it do not match my shifter at all the transfer case fit well in place and all just having that issue can some one give me an idea on how to fix , if its wrong transfer case, and if i have to take off and replace or can I leave that one on??????
