I'm trying to turn my 93 CTD into a Trail/Tow rig so I am trying to find some things out.

First I was told that my truck has a 60 front with a 70 rear..... but the other trucks I have looked at have a 60 f/r... ... so which is right?

Second what transfer case comes behind the Getrag??????

And finally what other transfer case options do I have with the Getrag????

Thanks

James

Well I figured that the transfer case and axles had to be pretty good, because every time I go Wheeling all the jeep guys jaws drop...

So either the 93 is well equiped or they are supprise to find a full-size truck keeping up with their Jeeps.

I have done some more research on the lower gear ratio for better off roading is to go with a Doubler... .

They recommend using a 203 in front of the 205 already in the truck... ...

The question I have is there any 203's that will bolt up to a Getrag without using an adapter?

Thanks again.

adapter

you would need an adapter. im not sure the gutbag trans has been adapted to a 203. i do know that the 4500 can be adapted. advanced adapters makes one but i think you need a chevy 203 w/input shaft@32 spline + advanced adapter #50-0202

or use an Atlas xfer case

... or you could swap out the 205 and use an Atlas transfer case with an adaptor from Advanced Adaptors... WAY spendy though.

The Atlas cases have lots higher ratio's than the 205's but they probably aren't much stronger. I'm selling my 205d (divorced) case because i need a mated unit, but in the end I think I'm going to go with an Atlas unit with a 3. 0 low ratio. I think the 205's had like 2. 4 ratio's or something like that. Still, really a matter of dollars.

Re: or use an Atlas xfer case

The Atlas is a distant relative of the Dana 300 transfer case, and would be a downgrade in strength from the 205, even if you installed the 32-spline front output into the Atlas. Call up Advance Adapters and see if they'll warranty an Atlas behind a CTD... that's a WHOLE lotta torque, I dunno. IIRC, Klune has a reduction box that you could pair with a 205 that is intended for use with full-size trucks (same warranty Q, though, with a CTD). The 205 uses 1. 96:1 reduction, FWIW.

I'm slowly building a Fuller fund for pursuit of better gearing (my trail rig has 20 forward speeds courtesy of a 5-speed and two gear-driven transfer cases, I gotta get a few more cogs in the tow wagon!)... when I get that figured out, a divorced 205 seems like the easiest way to get the grunt to the axles. What are you asking for your d205, Sam?

I don't plan on getting rid of my 205... ...

I'm going to create a doubler using 1/2 of a 203 and my current 205.....

You take the gear reduction from the 203 and with some adapters place the 203 inbetween the transmission and the 205... .

This gives you the following selections:

2high 1:1

2low 2:1

4high 1:1

4low 2:1

4lowlow 4:1

So this would give me alot more gear selections for offroading.

Also the section of the 203 that you use is suppose to be as strong as the 205... .

Check out this website and look at the Doubler kit

I would suggest going with a Klune-V attached between your transmission and transfer case. I would have serious doubts about putting a 203 behind a 6B and expecting it to live very long under hard usage.

Klune's ain't cheep but will hold up to the 6B and you have the option of 2:1, 3:1 ratios.

Hi JBurghard what size tires do you plan on running that you think you will need all that gearing ? Why not change ring and pinion to a lower gear? Is this a trail rig only ? the reason I ask is I am running 39. 5 boggers with an auto and 4;56 gears and have never encountered any situation where I need lower gearing then 4 low

Rock crawling requires the choice of lower gears, IMHO. Doing balance-point side-angle creeping, I've actually wanted more than the 210:1 that I have, a couple of times! Rarely, I'll admit.

My trail truck will motor 70mph down the road, blaze down fire roads, or creep in low-low. Choices -- that's the key.

Now on my Dodge tow wagon, the choices I'd like to have reside in the overdrive department. :D

Randii

i agree w/ randii, i have 126:1 overall low. sometimes its just not enough. before i put in my doubler i could use up a clutch in a weekend. p. s. a 203 range box will handle a 6bt no problem. ujoints and pinions are the weak link

I am currently looking at running either 36 or 37/12. 50/16. 5's on my truck...

She is my tow rig, my work truck(currently full of about a ton of bricks), as well as my offroad rig... ... .

Choices is what I need.....

If I run to much of a rear gear than I will lose milage as well as its highway abilities and I can't sacrifice that...

I currently have around a 38:1 setup in my truck which does pretty well on the trails but I would like more.....

If a get a transfer case that can give me a 4:1 setup then my truck would have around an 80:1 setup..... and still be able to go down the high way like I want...

So this is why finding a 203 that will mount to my Getrag is important to me... .

Thanks again

any news with this? , I am looking to use a doubler kit to mount the np203 range box infront of my 205. I am looking at a NV5600 swap also so a nv5600 to 203 fitting is the question. I'd like to have the new 205 lower range gears but not sure if i can swap them or not. .

Thanks

Deo

I would talk with J B Conversions about their low gear kit for the 205. I don't know if their kit will work on the Dodge 205 or not. Their phone number is 1-337-625-2379.
