Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transfer Case cracking??

Has anyone noticed hairline cracks all over the rear output shaft housing on the transfer case.



I was just under mine, and it appears that there are a lot of hairline cracks in the aluminum. :--)



I am gonna go back outside and take some pics and upload them.

I think those are casting marks from when it was molded. My transfercase has those marks on the back half - the front half is made of a different grade metal as is the tailshaft on the H. D. case's. I may be wrong but I think it is just cheap casting proceedure and not actual cracks.



I used to see those marks on a lot of automatic trannys in the 70's and early 80's - it seems that the latest cases are casted much better.

I have the same cracks....

I think they are normal "manufacturing defects"... . Oo. Oo.

Man, I sure hope so.



I would hate to be on a run and have it fail.

They appear to be from cracks in the casting mold, not the part. If no ATF is seeping out, they are most likely not cracks.

From what I have seen, the shafts tend to rip in half before the cases split, so I think you are safe.
