Want to change transfer case fluid after140K mi. on 2010 3500 manual transmission. Owners manual. says either ATF+4 or NVG246 if transfer case is NVG 246. Queston is, how do you know what type of transfer case this truck has?
The BW case arrived in mid '12 so it should be the NV271 or 273.
Nick
Thank you, gentlemen for your input. Ozymandia is correct. After scrapping off debris, ect. there is a round tag on the back of tc. says: New Process Gear: 273 D, Ass'y # 52123? 25AB, Serial #: 12-22 09-3, ratio: 272, made in Syracuse, New York. Still, don't know what make. I'm guessing that it is, as Nick suggest, i a NV 273. Some earlier post say, just put in ATF-4. This t.c. doesnt't work that hard, very little 4 wdr. time & equipped with front free spin hubs. BUT, this fluid needs to be changed, & am still not sure what to put in it. Any suggestions would help. Thanks in advance
I stuck with the OE BW/MOPAR fluid in my 2014 and it was fine through 362k miles when I traded......all without ASSSSSSSS/OIL.I used AMZ/OIL Universal ATF IN MY 98 still going strong at 400k.

I think that BW fluid is way better than ATF+4.
It feels slicker and smells like it has additives that wouldn't be put in ATF.

BUT, have you given the AMZ/OIL the "SLICKER" SMELLER" test???
No, but the BW fluid is designed for a transfer case with just splash lubrucatuon. No clutches or pumps or valves to gunk up.BUT, have you given the AMZ/OIL the "SLICKER" SMELLER" test???
As always......I was readily expecting your “one up”.I'm thinking my 98's been in and out of 4wd far more times than your highway towing machine.

ATF is designed for something completely different...... an automatic transmission that probably wouldn't like the additives in the BW fluid.
Nothing against Amsoil. But I think I will use the correct fluid.
