Transfer Case Leak

The transfer case (NP205) on my 92 has developed a leak around the Rear Output Shaft. Based on the Service Manual it is my guess that I need to replace the Oil Seal and the Gasket that holds on the Rear Seal Retainer?

This would appear to be a simple repair job?
The cost of the gasket and seal are approximately $11. 00.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Al: The seal replacement is a straight forward job, and if you have the manual, you're all set. You have to remove the nut and yoke for the driveshaft first (as you probably know).

al -- you should`nt have to remove the seal retainer. once you remove the yoke you should be able to pop the seal out and put the new one in. two things i can think of are, use a new yoke retaining nut and pull the speedo drive out. the internal gear is held in place by the yoke. if it moves when you pull the yoke out it will take a tooth off the outer gear when you slide the yoke back in. hope you have a big breaker bar i don`t remember what the torque is but its tight. oh a big pipe wrench on the yoke to hold it while taking the nut off and to torque it. it`s an easy job so good luck.

The job is finished - no more leak.

Total bill for parts $13.
Replaced the seal washer, oil seal and the gasket behind the seal retainer.

Comments: Had to take the seal retainer off in order to drive out the oil seal. The yoke just slid right off. However, if the yoke does not come off easily I would not try to pry it off, but would use a gear puller (this places no pressure on the seal retainer or on the gears).

Very simple, the service manual sure comes in handy.
