I read the owners manual today and discovered that the xfer case has Typ. III automatic transmission fluid. Is that correct or did I misread something?
Also want to change the diff. , rear Dana 80 & frt. Dana 60. to synthetic. Any suggestions on brands? I know it needs to be GL-5 rated. My driving is anywhere from subzero in Alaska to Mexico and towing a 14k 5th whl.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

360 GAS?!!!!!! Did I read that right? Any way, the switch to synthetics should get you a little more mileage, extreme weather compatability, extended drains, if you wish, and better wear protection.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 in the 80 & 60, and Amsoil ATF in the transfer.
If you want, do a search on this subject. You should come up with more opinions and info. than you'd ever care to read!!!!

Gene,
The synthetic is for the 98. 5 Cummins. Thanks for the info.
I did do a search on lubricants and didn't find much, hence the question.
The 1980 is a gasser. Didn't have Cummins in Dodges then. I thought about switching it to a Cummins about 1990. Found a wrecked 90 that had all the running gear and engine in good shape but decided it was too much work. I bought the 1980 crewcab new on Xmas eve 1980. My wife is still p---ed about it as I had just run to the grocery store for her and came home with a new truck. Got to jump when the time is right.
As an aside... . about 10 years ago an old couple from Oregon, pulling a travel trailer, came into a campground up here with a 1975 W200. It sounded real strange. Turns out he had an aircooled 6 cyl. diesel in it. He did it himself. Can't remember the brand but it was a German engine. Worked good except he kept twisting off u-joints with all the power it had.

Jack: I use the same synthetic as the others. Amsoil series 2000 75W90 in the front and rear differentials and Amsoil ATF in the transfer case. Also Amsoil 80W90 in the NV4500 with a GL-4 rating. Love your state. I was mining gold up in the Brooks range in 1977 on the Hammond River near Wiseman. My wife and I travelled up there again in 1986 in a new (I hate to say it) Ford. Hey! Fords have been good to me, but then I kept getting stirred to go Diesel. Well, I'm mighty pleased with my Cummins truck. I couldn't go back.

Jack,
That would be a DEUTZ Diesel. Fantastic engine! Don't think they have the power of the Cummins, but are great industrial engines that are very economical to run. Air cooled is an advantage in lots of applications.

I have a friend who has repowered DOZENS of Fords, Ramchargers, and wood chippers with these engines.
The ones I have seen come in 1,2,3,4,5,6 cylinder sizes. same engine, just shorter. Kinda neat.

No he is not "jagging you". I have seen the conversion. It was a Duetz.
Keep an open mind man.

Jack,
Don't let Cuda get to you, his favorite past time is heckling me! He gave me a bumper once, so I have to let him get his digs for at least a year, then I will crush him!
His other past time is asking me questions, listening to extremely intelligent and correct answers, then asking the entire TDR said question to check my answer!
The man gives me no credit!

BTW, Deutz or Duetz they both look wrong to me!!!

Jack,
Did you take a look at what lubricating engineers (LE) products have to offer. Looks like great stuff. If you see a post by oilman, he works for LE and has a lot of info in it.
