Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Transfer Case Noise

After my output-shaft snap ring let go for the second time and was replaced, I now have a banging noise coming from the transfer case when in 4wd. It sounds like it's kicking in and out of 4wd violently. Does it in high or low range. I took the case apart and everything looked OK. Even took it to a friends big-rig transmission shop and he said it's OK.



Would the linkage adjustment cause this sound or do you guys have any suggestions?

I had a snap ring break on mine and it made a terrible noise. But it sounds like you are familiar with that. Can you believe this, I had an appointment with Midwest transmission to fix a leak in my transmission the next day. So they removed, rebuilt and replaced it for about $240.



Anyway, the tech that rebuilt it said when the snap ring breaks it usually takes out somthing else ( poor memory but some little engagement dogs or something).



If you call them I am sure they can tell you what to check. They are very nice people who deal in trannies by the 1,000s but still treat me, the little guy, very well.



I don't remember his name but the tech who rebuilt mine was the Ray's son. Forgive him he drives a PSD.

You could try this . put the shifter in 4L. Go under the truck,loosen the pinch bolt, try shifting it ( i think its down if your not sertin have someone watch it as you put it in low to see what way it goes) then try to pull it down any further, its pretty tough i had to tap mine with a hammer to make it move. then tighten the bolt and try it . Oo.
