I use 80/90 gear oil and always change once a year and it stays clean. I am sure a synthetic would not hurt anything. Hope this helps.

The book shows 4. 7 Pints. It also states a 90 GL-5 Gear lube, or a SL engine oil. It also states the temps the truck will run in. For the GL-5 above 10F use 90 For the SL engine oil above 10F use 50. In my last Dodge(91)I used the Amsoil 75W-90 series 2000 lube in my transfer case.

You have a choice. You can either run the 75W-90 gear lube or a SJ rated 50 grade engine oil according to the book. I prefer the 75W-90 gear lube.
