ATF...

... my service manual says ATF+4 but I'm pretty sure any Dexron-type ATF would work OK. I put ATF+4 back in mine because supposedly it's synthetic... . take that for what it's worth. Out here in Hillbilly Flats it's pretty hard to come up with synthetic stuff-so I refilled with the +4. Definitely doesn't smell like regular ATF-has a scent almost like LSD friction modifier.

wow, the oil in the transfercase was dark... almost black. It was due to be changed out. The tailshaft seal was a major PITA to replace. That is why I was doing all this in the first place... it was leaking.

ATF+4 and Color....

Being as your truck's a 2001 like mine it should have had ATF+4 in it from the factory. Apparently according to the service manual it darkens as a normal consequence of age-the manual is fairly explicit in stating that color shouldn't be used as a guideline to change it out. Why does it darken? Who knows-DC probably saved a cent or two on the dye!

Now having said that, I changed all my fluids out around 25000 kilometers (15000 miles) for the peace of mind of knowing that any break-in metal would get flushed out. I went with the factory fluids for the 5600 and 241HD-in the transmission for warranty purposes and the transfer case for the reason I stated in my 1st post. Diffs got 75W90 synthetic for its superior flowability in the cold temps that are unfortunately coming our way.

I've been useing 5W30 Syn. motor oil in chain drive T-cases for years. The wifes Cherokee has 130K on a NV231, Syn oil since we brought it home from the dealer new. It's cheaper for Dodge to put in ATF at thye factory, Just ask one of their bean counters.

Using Motor OIl in the new tranfer case need to be done with alittle caution. If you live in a climate that get below 10 F in the winter use ATF. All the new chain transfer case have little oil pumps in them and when it gets cold they will actually suck there pick up hose close cracking it and then no lube

I am running Amsoil universal ATF in mine.

drawson, I use a thin weight synthetic motor oil which has about the same viscosity as ATF even in cold weather, cost less and has better lubricating qualities than conventional ATF.

For your information, ATF fluids are usually a Multi_Viscosity fluid. Typically a Dexron II & Type F is 5W-20. Dexron III,Mercon V & ATF+4 is a 0W-20. As far as frictional characteristics, each ATF have varying coefficients of friction. The degree of "slipperiness" for Ford Type "F" is Grabby, For Dexron II & III and Mercon V it is Slippery, and Chrysler ATF Plus 4 is Moderately slippery.
