Well about 10,000 miles ago when I did my clutch we noticed that the real seal of my transfer case where the driveshaft slides in was leaking.

Now I want to replace the seal and go ahead and change the fluid in the transfer case for fear of overheating it and burning it up. So what type of oil are we supposed to use in our transfer case?

Yeah I know I'm slow.

I just serviced both diffs, transmission, and x-fer case with Lucas 75-90 synthetic. It's supposed to be good stuff, and I've had nothing but good luck with all Lucas products. FWIW.

Just had mine serviced at my local diesel shop and had them put Redline Synthetic (ATF C+ ??) in it. They showed me the old fluid, with only 41,000 miles on the truck it was almost black! Does anyone know what they put in these trucks at the factory?

Gear lube, etc

Just checked my transfer case (57k miles on the truck) and it is still very red, but after reading the above, I think I'll change it anyway, Rear is still clean, but that has only about 30k on it as I installed a MagTech cover at 26K Probably should do the transmission, too. Kinda sad, in my opinion, that we have to do this to the 5 speed, as I am used to lightweight truck trannies going lots of miles with no maintenance. My friend has over 300k on his one ton Chey and the transmission and rear are still going strong, and that truck gets worked. I never keep a truck that long! Don't think I ever routinely changed manual transmission lube in over 40 years of "playing" with trucks. Oh well, there is always a first time!
