I was wondering if anyone has changed out their transfer case with an after market one? Mine is getting sloppy at 222,000 and was looking for something with an overdrive. Anyone know of such a unit that will bolt right up to my transmission? I'am looking for one to fit my1997 in my signature below.

After 220,000 miles why not just have it rebuilt and keep trucking? Seems like it has worked pretty well so far. They are not that tough to rebuild yourself. Bluementhal Welcome to Blumenthal Manufacturing can get you a rebuild kit or rebuild it for you.

I looked into over drive units, long story short, there are a couple out there. None hold much more than a quart of fluid which means you have to engineer a cooling system for it. They also don't want you to tow heavy, work it hard, etc... And the warranty is brief. I decided not to to do it.

thanks Mark I think I'll just rebuild my. I tow pretty heavy and I don't need a weak link to give out. I don't needed to drop the transmission to remove that transfer case do I?

Nope! About 8 bolts and it slips off the back of the transmission. I'll second that is is very easy to do yourself. I would recommend takin pics, though, and doing it all at one. It can be a huge PITA when going back together and it's much easier if you do it all while it's fresh in your mind. Good luck!

Just like Cowboy said, 8 bolts and out. Pretty easy. Just make sure you have fresh ATF to put back in it and take a photo or two while taking it apart. I prefer the floor method: as i take something apart, I lay it out in order that it came apart, make sure to lay things down in the orientation they came out as well (face up or down as you like). There has to be a rebuild manual available somewhere, ask around. Bluementhal is probably your best bet there.

Be sure to re-torque the T-case bolts after it's been on a little while. Otherwise they'll loosen up, leak fluid slowly so you don't notice, and you'll burn up the high-low shift fork. Don't ask me how I know this.

Will I lose any transmission fluid when I pull the transfer case? Or should I drain the transmission?

I dont think you will lose any transmission fluid from what I remember but you might as well change it while you are under there. The transfer case will pour out of the drive shaft yoke if you tip it so definitely drain that first

I bought em back in 98 or 99 have been very happy with them maybe next year a little blasting and painting of the rims. the powder coat has finally started to bubble with rust
