Hey Guys, My 2001. 5 6speed, 4x4, has developed a little bit of a leak. Trying to locate this leak is kinda like pulling sharks teeth. No matter how long I stay underneath there I just can't find the damn leak. There is a little fluid between the transfer case and the 6speeed but not much. I have as of yet not added fluid to the transmission and here is where the question comes in. Is there a separate way to fill the transfer case and the transmission or are they both lubricated through the transmission? I thought that the transfer case was filled and lubricated with ATF even in the 6speed. If this assumption is correct where in the hell is the fill tube or how do you check the fluid level in the transfer case? If anyone knows, help would certainly be appreciated. Thanks, Gunny

Gunny, when you are laying under your truck (feet to the front of the truck) There are 2 bolts on the backside of the transfer case(side toward the back of the truck) the top bolt is the fill hole and the bottom bolt is the drain hole. It take ATF, it is completely separate from the 6 speed transmission. The transfer case can be filled to the top of that fill hole. Are you sure your not getting blow by out of the pill bottle in the front of the engine? If it gets full it will blow oil clear back to the transmission. The only place I have hear that the transfer case leaks is the out put shaft. Hope this helps.

Pit Bull,

Thanks man!! I just went and crawled under the truck and there where those two plugs just like you said. The fluid that is leaking is not trans fluid for sure so I think the transfer case os fine. The leak looks like it is coming from between the transmission and the transfer case, if that is possible. The fill plug on the transmission is some kind of big ole tork type plug and I have been unable to find a socket that will fit, so I have not checked the transmission as of yet. This is not much of a leak, just enough to get my attention. But it has been leaking for how long I do not know. The fluid is almost clear and not dirty at all so i do not think it is engine oil. I will check that pill box, I think that is in the front of the engine, Right? Thanks again that was a big help.

You can make a socket for the trans plug out of a bolt. I believe that it is 5/8's. Take a short bolt and put two nuts on it and jam them together and insert the head of the bolt in the plug and put wrench on the nut closest to the trans and turn counter clockwise. Installing put wrench on nut farthest from trans and install clockwise. I did this till I got the Mac man to get me the right socket.

The Trans plug is a 17mm hex socket. The tcase is 10 i think, i can't remember off hand, i'll check the manual to make sure. My 6 speed leaks in the rear under that big nut on the bottom side. Been leaking pretty bad i need to get in there and reseal it.
