Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) transfer case removal

After hrs of searching and diagnosing i'm believing my rear output shaft bearing is bad. I've got a "slap" that is often talked about when searching forums. And my rear shoes are adjusted and 2 weeks old. (seals are also good) My drive shaft has some up and down play in it that I think is due to driving about a year with a seized up drive shaft u-joint. (had a vibration and kept checking u-joints for play when instead it was stuck!)



Long story shorter, i'm going to drop the case, i'm not about to attempt that c-clip on top to get the tailshaft off. Does anybody know of somewhere to find a breakdown pic of the guts of a 241 HD? And or a parts list so I can order that bearing and a new tailshaft housing gasket?

the c clip is not hard to do it is alot better than pulling the whole case get up there with a light and it just needs to be spread apart I did one about a month ago first time on a 241hd took me about 5 mins. you could try Dan at quad4x4.com hes great lots of help.

i'm more worried about trying to get it back on... lifted up there on that shaft, all thru that tiny peek hole. I've put a mirror up there and looked at it, it aint pretty.

The guy that answered the phone at transfercases.com was VERY helpful. He thinks I should double check my driveline before I blame that bearing. Also he says there is a bushing in the tailshaft that he would lean twards before suspecting the bearing. I'm going to drain my fluid and inspect it today.



Kris, why did you have to remove your tailshaft. Was it just a leak?

I Removed it because there is a place on mine for the Speedometer cable. I pulled it so that I could weld a cap over the hole

mM fluid looked like metallic paint in the jar. But my play clunk i'm feeling has to be more than what my tailshaft moves. I'm thinking the metal in the oil is normal from the chain wearing.

Back to the drawing board. I found a leaking brake cylinder in the rear, replaced that yesterday. Still has that "slap".
