Getting ready to do the transmission and have never seperated a transfer case from the transmission before. This is my first auto transmission i will be doing. Done a few clutches but have always just slid transmission/X-sfer case back as one.

Anyone have some pointers or step by step instructions or pictures that may help me out a little better? Feel free to share, PLEASE.

While i have the transfer case down/out is there anything i should do while its down? When seperating does the fluid need drained? Whats an indexing ring?

ANy pointers would be great. THANKS

Easiest way to deal with transfer case on a lift is to disconnect it, the vacuum harness, electrical harness and set on the lift with the driveshaft attached. Obviously, if you are removing it to break down, you'll want to remove the rear shaft as well.

If you are going to break down the transfer case, drain the fluid. You may as well save a little weight, but it's gonna be heavy.

An indexing ring is bolted to the case and allows the case to be "clocked" up or down for more favorable front driveline angles when using a lift kit.

All i am doing is removing it to replace transmission. So do i need to drain it or can i leave fluid in it? I thought the rear drive shaft connected to back of transfer case via slip yoke? I dont know as i haven't really taken a close look at mine? THANKS

crawl under there, unbolt bolt it, sit behind it, give it a hug and pull back, set on ground... . Its not too bad, I've done it like this about 3-4 time now, getting it out is a lot easier than getting it in. Call a friend to help put it back in. Draining the fluid helps with the weight and mess. good luck.

Ditto what Bob said. I've done it 6 or 7 times the same way. Pull the drive shaft and tape a heavy baggie over the end to save fluid. Slip yoke in back. 4 bolts on flange to ft ds. 6 bolts on t-case to transmission. They are studs, so leave 1 or 2 nuts barely on til you're ready to drop it. My back sucks and I benched it out and in - less than 100lbs. I think theres 1 vac plug, one vac line, and the linkage. If you've done a clutch before, this will be gravy!
