Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transfer Case Seal Leaking

I was under the truck this past weekend and noticed that the driveshaft seal at the rear of the transfer case is leaking. It must have just started because I have not seen any puddles of ATF where Iusually park. It is just wet with a small drop of fluid at the end of the transfer case.



The truck has 54,600 miles on the odometer.



Is this a common problem?



Since my baby is going to the dealer tomorrow for service before my trip to Florida I am going to have them replace the seal while itis there. Eespecially since I have an extended 100K warranty.



I don't remember ever reading anything hear about this.

Mines doing the same thing!! At 40,000 miles!! Went and got one and plan on lying on the floor this evening changing it. . Oh, well... Robin

Mine blew out at less that 10k mi on it. Didn't lose much fluid, dealer had it in and out within 3 hours of my first phone call to them. They told me it was just a bad seal from the get go.

I've changed my seal 6 Times and it keeps on leaking.



I've about given up. Still trying to find a fix. I figure if I run it that way during the winter... My truck will never rust with all the ATF being sprayed underneath.



I check my TC pretty often and it's usually pretty full. I know I'm losing fluid but not much. Just enough to P*** me off. :{

I suspect that mine just started recently because there was no evidence of fluid being sprayed under the truck.



So is this a fairly easy thing to replace, if it happens again?

Mine was replaced along with the rear driveshaft at 31K.

Took me 15 minutes with minor hand tools to replace it last time.

If you need a hand and I got the time - let me know and I'll give it to you.

Been there, Done that at 38K. Conveniently out of warranty at this point! I think Dodge uses 37K mile seals hoping they will last just long enough to get them off the hook.

Yep, had the dealer change mine and 19k miles and now at 21k it's leaking again.



Funny thing my 96' never leaked after 56k miles and to this day a buddy that bought it says it still doesn't leak.



Is there any difference in seals between the 241 and 241HD?



Also is this the latest and greatest part #

Are you sure its the seal? What mine is doing is running down the spline, past the pressed in plug onto the U-joint . Then the rotating u-joint sprays it all across the underside of the truck. I took the driveshaft out and poured loctite around the plug. Only stoped it for a little while. I was hopeing to come across a fix on the board here but so far no luck.

Transfer case seal leak

My 2001 leaked new from the factory. Dealer replaced it at 200 miles. It leaked again at 5900 miles. Dealer replaced seal and yoke. Now at 30,800 miles dry as a bone since yoke replacement. All replaced under warranty.

Well this may help and may not!! I am a heavy mechanic at a dodge dlr and what I have seen and found it’s not the seal leaking it’s the plug at the top of the extension housing leaking down on top of the seal making it look like that is what’s leaking!! Before replacing or taking it into a dlr take your hand and feel the top of the extension housing and see if it’s wet, if it is then that’s the concern the plug on top and hope this helps!!!!!

ditto on the plug on the top of the extension housing. Only the 241HD's have it, went through two seals before we realized it was the plug. The HD's have a passenger side PTO cover and the LD's dont.



There are three versions of the NV-241,

241, 241LD ( actually a heavy duty Dodge spec'd one ) and a 241 HD with the PTO capability (wider chain and one additional ball bearing ) All Dodge versions are either the LD or the HD.

New & improved seal. Dodge part #5086054AA. Had mine replaced with old seal twice and still leaked. Put new seal in and no leaks. Later

Had a slow leak around seal and replaced under warranty at 9K. I've got 17K on the truck now and it's still dry. This does seem to be a fairly common problem.

Had a seal leak at 8. 5K, dealer replaced seal in a couple of hrs. I'm at 10. 5k now and no leak.

Mine has been leaking ever so slightly for probably 30K miles. I changed the fluid out to Amsoil synthetic ATF about 10K miles ago, it wasn't really low even then.



After reading this thread late last week, I crawled back under the truck over the weekend to see if my problem is also the bolt/plug at the top of the rear output shaft. Well... . I can not find any such bolt or plug! I even got out a mirror to look on top of the darn output tube, and find nothing. Regardless, there is no sign of any leakage except for right at the rear seal. I do have the 241HD, as I have the passenger side PTO cover.



So, I guess it's off to Dodge for a new seal and a change.



Could one of you guys who has done this, kindly email or PM me the directions? I figure I'm mechanically inclined enough to tackle something of this nature, especially if it takes under 1/2 an hour.

Well the dealer did the seal change under warranty for me. They also had to rebuild the front end with new tie rods to correct a steering wander that I was experiencing.

Just ordered a new T-case rear seal from my local Dodge dealer. Thanks for posting the part #, as I was able to compare and confirm I had the right thing with the parts guy before plunking down my $ and finding out I got the wrong thing after my truck is laying in pieces... .



Thanks to MacTruck for his words of experience on how to R&R the seal. I'll try to take a few pictures of the process this weekend if I get to it (supposed to rain non stop for the next several days... ).
