Hi Guys and Merry Christmas!

Just went out and prepped the truck for winter--changed all the fluids, new front left u joint blah, blah. Put it in 4x4 for the first time in probably 5 months and it bangs when you first take off. make a mild turns and she bangs again. (i'm on dirt). put her in 4x4 low and it really bangs on take off or turn. It was fine last winter. I checked the u joints, they seem ok. noise really seems to be coming from the transfer case. Any ideas? I'm still under the 7/70 so i guess i'll go that route, but i just can't believe it's fine then it's not.

thanks for the help

oh yeah--it's absolutely fine in 4x2. I tow with it and drive it daily--no problems.

I have done 2 dodge transfercases in the last 30 days with the same noise, it is kicking the transfercase front input out. The synchro hub or fork is the problem. On case was in a 97 diesel that was run out of oil and burned the fork, The other was a 97 gas that was used to plow snow. Both had the same basic noise and that is the area to look at. Pull the transfercase and spil it.

well, the oil has been changed often, never dry or low. no plowing, in fact no abuse whatsoever. kind of weird it just dies at 66k. your description sounds pretty accurate though. it does sound like something inside is slipping then banging. thanks.
