transfer case slop

I have a 1996 dodge 2500 with the cummins engine. Heavy duty transfer case and 83,000 miles. Mostly highway driving with little towing. The transfer case seems to have a lot of slop in it. I can probably turn it 5 degrees before it stops. All the u joints are good. Is this just normal wear or is something wrong with it. Maybe it always did it but I seem to notice it more now.

This is my first 4x4, but it seems sloppy to me from the day it was new.

As a side note, my Dad has a 1990 2wd std cab, and it was always sloppy too. He had the U joints done, and center beraing support. Still sloppy.

Guess it's characteristic.
