Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) transfer case snap ring broke, is my brass synchro toast???

T-case grinds in 2wd upon aceleration, sounds like the snap ring. I just finished rebuilding it, like bolted it all up 30 minutes ago, took it for a quick drive, and had it grind just a few times lightly. Did I cook my brass synchro ring :rolleyes:

It all depends on how "lightly". I believe you can change the snap ring with it in the truck. If it were me, I'd try that first.
 
I've had mine break a few times. They're easy to change out. Take off rear driveshaft, 4 bolts holding the tailshaft of the transfer case and it's right there. The damage all depends on how long you drove it with the grinding noise.
 
The total driving time was about 4 minutes, but the total time spent grinding was about 5-10 seconds. I think I'll try leaving it, because the 4wd shifter does work still. I assume that it is the brass synchro ring that was grinding, or maybe it was the collar that slides over the rings and gears and it walked into the gears ahead of it. Need x-ray vision.
