I am having a problem with the "C" clip on the rear output shaft on my 241 standard T-case. I didn't learn till I broke it last year that all it is was that little "C" clip. Since I bought the truck back in '99 it has broke 4 times, the last one on my way home from the dyno Saturday.

Is there a bigger, better, or improved c-clip I can use?

am I the only one having trouble with this?

I have even looked at skipping the 241HD and fitting a 271 out of a Ford under there, so I don't have to mess with it for a while

Mine has let loose twice. At 28,000 and 65,000 miles. I had both fixed under warranty. I have not heard of a reason or a solution to the problem. When it breaks, four wheel drive will lock it together and let you get home. You can pull the front vacuum line to lose the front end if you have a long trip.

its not that it is not drivable, when that c-clip goes it lets the output move foreward in the truck and 2 gears grind together... thats why I've had it rebuilt 3 times

Mtn Goat,

I talked to the friend of mine that had that problem one time as well.

He said his clip broke in two pieces and allowed the gears to grind together and grind the outer edges off the gears.

He told me he went and purchased a new clip and took a pipe the same diameter as the clip and beat it back on with a sledge hammer over the shaft.

He has put over 100,000 miles on it and no more problems.

Mtn Goat,

Where you having any problems with the t-case before it went out? A few years ago my t-case (NV 241 Standard) went out and I belive it was this C clip. Tanny shop said a $1 part on end of the main shaft broke and allowed the shaft to move back and forth causing several gears needing to be replaced. The symptoms I had when it went was a hellashious grinding when accelerating from a stop in 2WD, problem went away in 4WD.

Prior to the t-case going out I had always had problems going from 2WD to 4High. Always felt like linkage was binding and would grind while tring to go in. The only way it would engage with none of these problems was if I engaged it while the truck was stopped. Each winter I would go to the dealer and tell them these problems. I was always told they could find nothing wrong and I was not engaging the t-case properly. About 5-6K out out warranty the t-case went out. Long story short, Dealer & DC pulled thier typical BS and I paid to have it rebuilt at a competent transmission shop. Thier impression of tear down inspection revealed the t-case most likely was defective since new and the dealers gave me the run around all along.

"C" clip

So is there any quick and easy way to tell if this clip is broken other than noise from the TC?

Expiring minds want to know!

when it breaks, it sounds like you are trying to go into reverse at 55mph going forward w/out the clutch... but only for a brief second, because you definately get off of the go pedal... .

another guy that was with me one time said it sounded like an impact gun going off under the floor board

hope this might help with a diagnosis

also all you have to do to check for sure is take the drive shaft out of the slip yolk on the back of the t-case and there are 4 bolts holding the tailshaft piece on... the c-clip is inside... in pieces if it is broke
