Im looking at this tank. #ad
Never had this type before.

The 50 gallon looks pretty good with the TRAX fuel transfer system. . (on paper).

Just wondering what you guys think. Do you have one, or know anyone that does? Any comments?

Also, is the diamond plate really worth the extra 210 bucks??

As always, Thanks in advance.

VA, DD1's, PS Boost module & elbow... also, Nitrous Oxide piped direct into the block (stealth - to keep the warranty), twin turbos, 10 gallon per minute fuel pump, ECM right out of Don Garlit's Top Fueler (he gave it to me) (for letting him ride in my truck), Super Modified DD1 Injectors ("Hand Honed" with a 1/4" reamer & my 12v Makita). :) More BOMBING to come!!

I too have been looking, but for tanks under the truck, keeping the bed free... .

I like the quality of Trans Flow but not sold on the Trax computer system. Just what we need eh? Another electrical gizmo! I wish they had the old A/B solenoid switch. I'm familiar with that..... And their prices are waaaay up there. #ad

I too asked about diamond plate and was told that it was a case of appearance. Wearability is the same, Diamond Plate is shiney and is eye catching.

Check out Aero Tanks in Corona, CA. The metal is not quite as thick and don't know that they do drop tests, but lots of people have them and they've been in biz lots of years..... and they use the standard solenoid switch (you can buy one at any NAPA)

Start a search in the archives for auxiliary fuel tanks and a lot of info will come up for you to digest.

If you go with an in bed tank, why not go larger than 50 gal? They make a 74 gal wedge or a 98 gallon unit, and even larger. If you're gonna fill up - fill it up!

Several of us have been after Tansfer Flow to bring their new 58 gallon metal replacement tank for our 35 gal (is it really? Seems like much less!) OEM plastic tank. Call their 800 # and ask for Ben Winters. Last I heard they were installing the prototype.

If you find out anything new, let me know.

Good luck

Richard

Does anyone have an idea what the cost is in terms of fuel mileadge to haul the extra fuel around? I'm sure the penalty is higher in city driving than when running down the interstate, but I think there must be some penalty for hauling an additional 4 or 500 lbs. around. The penalty is easily overcome when traveling to Canada, for instance, but what about local driving? Thanks. Ray

My buddy with his '99 Ford PS (NICE truck!) has the Transfer Flow setup in his, and LOVES it - it is very nice looking and with all the electronics stuff, is VERY handy for keeping track of fuel and mileage. I have a plain-jane combination toolbox/50 gal. tank in the bed of my Dodge - but I have a switch that I activate to pump from it down into the main tank when needed - it has no guage of its own inside the truck, so never exactly sure of what remains in it after refilling main tank, but that's never been a problem. The tank/box combo cost me $275 at local RV dealer, and is made outta steel. Believe me, if you travel any great distances into unfamiliar territory, especially pulling a load, the minor penalty in additional WEIGHT of fuel is COMPLETELY offset by increased driving range plus the ability to select better pricing on fuel as you encounter it, and more selectivity in places where you can easily access the fuel pumps - with only the main tank, when you're outta fuel, you have NO choice but to take what you can find, WHEN and WHERE you can find it!

Gary, thats way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper then the one at tramsferflow. Yep, like davidson says, just what we need is more electronics to go wrong. . I kinda like the manual transfer. Guess youd have to be reeeeal careful about leaving it on, & overflowing the main tank.

Mine is not transfer flow but I love it. I can justify the cost by living longer,(less stress and worry about running out on long pulls). It seems the extra weight just makes the truck ride better. If I can fuel up at a place for several cents cheaper than the last time, I go ahead and make a pit stop and get fuel if I need 50 or more gallon. then the money saved I figure it goes toward the price of my tank. Mine cost right at a 1,000 and all I do is hit a toggle switch and keep going.

100 gallons of fuel plus the tank weight will be around 850+ lb. If the tank is around 1/2 full and not fully baffled, you will get "seasick" at traffic lights while the fuel sloshes around after you stop.

Check quality carefully. For example, I bought a Weatherguard because of low price, but the bottom wasn't flat, it rusted inside badly, necessitating a lot of filter changes, and it developed a stress crack near one of the welded-in internal baffles. The hold-down bolt arrangement seemed rather minimal for such weight.

I now have a 30 gallon in-bed tank and that seems a pretty good size most of the time. I plan to get the Transfer Flow replacement tank soon, increasing the 35 gallon capacity by 20 or so.

Yea, how long does it take to learn the lesson of, "cheaper" ends up being more expensive in the long run. Just like tools, if you get the cheapo now, and it either breaks, or flexes too much to get a good grip, we end up buying the best one the next time anyways. Better just to get the good one the first time around.

Besides being seasick throws off a persons "reaction time" at the lights. . #ad

So, Im not really concerned about having this fancy auto transfer, or even having a gauge on the aux tank. Who cares? It would be fine just to flip the toggle switch between tanks. Its easy to estimate by counting miles, and use the main tank last. sounds like it would require a pump in the aux tank to do this.

Anyways, a setup like Okies, or something like that would be fine. Yes quality of material & design is a big thing like Joe says.

So do you guys think the diamond plate is worth the extra bucks, or is it more of a cosmetic thing?

Hell, a person could waste so much time thinking about this stuff. I coulda been up in Chico having it installed by now. Sheesh.

SHUCKS, *any* outfit smart enough to be IN the aux tank business is ALSO smart enough to include baffles as well... I certainly have never been aware of any tendencies to sea-sickness with MY setup...

My transfer setup consists of a fairly conventional cartridge filter to keep debris outta the following valve and pump, ahead of an electric fuel valve that's activated by the same switch as the fuel pump to prevent unwanted fuel siphoning, then the fuel pump itself, then a much larger fuel filter/water separator, then a line plumbed into the main fuel fill pipe. The power for the valve/pump is obtained from a keyed takeoff on the fuse block so I don't walk off and forget that transfer is in progress, and there is also a large flashing LED mounted between my pyrometer and boost guage on top of my steering column that maintains my attentions so I don't forget what's going on and overflow the main tank as I drive down the road. Guys who do most of their driving empty or only around their local area may not appreciate the advantage of an extra tank - but us fellas who get out on the road for long distances towing a load dern SURE do!

I bought the 60 gal Northern tool tank/tool box combo. Its made by "RDS" in Perry, Florida. . 1(850) 584-6898.

That will give me a total of 96 gallon cap. Enough to go 1100 plus miles under the worst of MPG senario. ( My worst MPG was 10-11MPG towing up to reno with a GCVW 17,000--4:10 rear gears)

The welds look good, overall quality looks good. ( I was a welder some time ago, and the welds look good in quality)

I'm in the process of getting the fuel pump, filter, and now, thanks to Gary, a valve that will stop siphon. . Had not given thought to that.

Have the vent/return line figured though to keep from over filling.

I'll keep everybody posted on the progress.

I bought a transfer Flow at the end of the summer. I installed it myself. It took about an afternoon, into the evening.

the directions were right on. All needed parts ere in the kit. If anyone wants specifics let me know.

I have not seen a lot of milage difference with and without. I only got the 30 gallon. I din't want to give up any more bed space thatn that.

The electronics are what make the system different from others. I understand that there are legalities in some states in RE: driver controlled fuel transfers.

The computer keeps both tanks about even. I only have to fuel up once a month now. I like that a lot. I have the diamond plate tool / fuel tank. I never had anything much in my old box. Now I don't have to reach down as far for "Stuff". It looks great. I fing the metal in the diamond plate to be thicker, better quality, than other boxes I have seen.

I have a 98 gallon Transferflo crossbed tank with Trax transfer. Little extra weight but truck can handle it. I very happy with it. When traveling, don't have to worry about fuel everyday. Can also take advantage of fuel prices.
