CTD break-in and towing?

Heaviest load yet with new truck.

Does anyone have a wedge type tank from Transfer Flow? If you do, do you like it, worth the money or wish you got bigger capacity tank?

Also if anyone has expierence on Highway Products storage containers for the bed of the pickup. Looking to get a 5th wheel tailgate storage container from this brand.

Thanks for the info.

CTD,

Joe Donnelly did and article in the Register a few issues back on the TF wedge tank. As for the FW box, I have heard that Highway Products build a fine unit. UWS (United Welding Service) builds one also that is widely avalable at many truck accessory shops, they are a good bit less expensive than the HP boxes.

I will look thru the back issues. Now that you say that something comes to mind that I have seen information on this topic. UWS sounds like a good deal.

I am very happy with the 74 gallon Transfer Flow wedge tank. If maximum capacity is your goal, andyou don't care about seeing into the bed (to check a 5th wheel or gooseneck coupling), I had their 98 gallon box-shaped tank in my '97. It too was excellent. Their kits ensure you hve everything you need and everything fits perfectly. Quality, welds, and cleanliness inside are tops. See Issue 44, p. 147 for the 74 gallon tank, and Issue 35, p. 126 for the 98 gallon. An article on the 56 gallon replacement tank for 2003-up will appear in the next issue (#48).

I have the 74 gallon wedge tank from Transfer Flow and am happy with it, though it was expensive. I especially like the way this system automatically keeps both the OEM and the Transfer Flow tank at the same %. In other words, when the OEM tank is 1/2 full, the Transfer Flow tank is 1/2 full. This is all done automatically by the system. I have had the system for about 5 years now without any problems. I really like the way it gives you clear vision for hooking up my 5th wheel. Also, as somebody else mentioned, it lets you observe those Ugo types scrunch up as you back up.

Sounds like Transfer Flow is the way to go. With diesel being the price it is now these days I can go out of state to arizona and fill up there 40 cents cheaper a gallon at the truck stops.

Would anyone not suggest having a toolbox 5th wheel tailgate? Is it a bad idea to have that. Would it be better to have a air flow thru tailgate?

I also have the 5th wheel style tail gate tool box along with a flow-thru style tail gate. Understand that with the tank, hitch and toolbox you no longer have a pickup, but rather your own dedicated tow vehicle. From what I have read tests have shown that flow-thru tail gates don't help much, if at all. They claim our trucks were designed to preform best with the OEM tail gate on and in the closed position. I have a 5th wheel tail gate from Ultra Fab Products of Elkhart, IN and I am not happy with it. My main complaint is the fact that the paint keeps bubbling up and flaking off. It is fast becoming a hunk of rust.

If I were real handy (with money) I would have installed a custom built Utility box in the first place.

I have a Highway Products rear mount box. Well built and waterproof. I saw no changes in my mileage but weight distribution sure changed. It is very easy to load 500 lbs in that sucker before you know it.

With the freeways the way they are around here, a extra 500 pounds would help out!

The highway products box... Is it permanently installed or is it removable without any trouble?

I bolted it to the bed. I'm sure a remove system of some kind could be fabricated, but it isn't designed to come out.

I had an auxiliary tank, in the bed, on my 2001 CTD but when I got my 2005 I decided to replace the OEM 35 gallon tank with a 57 gallon tank from Titan SuperTanks. I've filled it a couple of times and I'm very satisfied with it, so far. Just didn't want a tank in the bed this time... :)
