Transfer Pump Failure

I have about 50,000 miles on my rig now and the check engine light came on the other day. I immediately took it in to the dealership. A day and a half later they figured out that the transfer pump has failed.



My question is... What is a transfer pump? Does it transfer fuel from the tank to the engine?



The dealership said they have to order a part for the truck and it will be 3 more days until the truck would be fixed. Is there any kind of way that I would be able to get rental car from them for free??

its your lift pump, the small low pressure pump that pulls fuel from the tank and supplies your high pressure fuel pump. Its mounted on your filter housing. They will put an updated pump in your fuel tank, its deffinatly a step up.

Does the updated pump send more fuel to the high pressure pump? Do they last longer than the older version?



I would of got a rental car but I didn't buy a extended warranty. Cheap son's of B*&^es... .

Recently, I've noticed a condition on my truck that I'm sure wasn't there before. Now, when I turn the ignition key to "on", the lift pump runs for approx 45 seconds before cutting off. Before, if I did the same thing, it would run for just approx 5 seconds. Does anybody believe there's now a pending problem with my lift pump and/or some other fuel-related part?

The manual says that when the key is first turned on (without starting the engine) the pump will run for approximately 1/2 second. If yours is running that long I would suspect one of two things. Either it can't develop pressure or it can't get the flow it needs from the tank to develop pressure (maybe a plugged in-tank screen?).



I didn't realize until recently, that the lift pump is on the engine (at least early models). I just though I couldn't hear it because it was back by the tank. I think I'm not hearing it because it happens so fast.



I think I'll check tonight to see if I can here it cycle (now that I know where to listen).

I don't have a svc and I get a loaner every time.

It all depends on the dealer.

No update as of yet for you guys. My rig is still at the *******. Why is the new pump so much better than the old one??

I got the truck back from the ******* (dealer). No money was charged becuase it was covered with warranty. The dealer performed a DRB test and fault code P0628 low voltage at lift pump showed up. They tested and replaced transfer pump with retrofit. They also flashed the PCM.



Two questions here. . What is a DRB test? What is flashing the PCM?

The Drb test is just reading the code in your case,and hopefully they flashed the ECM. Which is an update to the software to make alowances for the new in tank pump.

Okay, the paper work that I have from the service department says they flashed the PCM. Pump Control Module?? I would think they reflashed the ECM too..... But who knows?

Pcm is powertrain control module I didn't notice what year your truck is but 05 and up don't have pcm
