I've been pretty disappointed with my 1995 diesel pickup. The truck seems to have low power and blows a lot of white smoke when I start it. Also I've noticed it does not want to shift from second to third. The problem seems to be worse when the transmission is cold. When I leave work and going up a slight grade the transmission will not shift. I'm running about 45 mph with the rpm's at about 2500 and blowing the biggest cloud of white smoke. My coworkers laugh and cough as they pass me by in their trucks doing 80 mph. Once I make the turn and start downhill the truck seems to shift a little better but it still does not like to shift from second to third. What do you all think?

Mapquest says 39 Miles, heck I would drive up just to chat with him, he will treat you right just don't ride in his truck then you'll be like me... ... more power, Seriously call him! I'll PM him for you so he sees this post.

Bob, good thinking!

Slow or delayed shifting into third when cold is most often a bad lipseal in the front drum. The same clutch applies in reverse. Do you notice a delayed engagement into reverse when cold as well?

Do a pressure test on both the accumulator port (middle port on passenger side) as well as the front servo port (front port on passenger side. In third gear front servo pressure should be within 5 psi of what the accumulator port reads.

Watch the front servo pressure as the truck shifts into 3rd. Does the pressure rise quickly (good seal) or does it drag upward slowly as the clutch applies (bad seal).

If you are not comfortable doing pressure tests then take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Tom's name has been mentioned. He should be well versed in pressure testing.

A good technician should be able to diagnose 90% of transmission problems from pressure tests without having to tear out your transmission ($$$) to take a look.

I tried calling Black Mountain diesel a couple of times and left a message but my phone call was never returned. Also not only does my truck blow white smoke, have low power and transmission shift terrible but this afternoon my windshield wipers quit working. I used to own a 1992 dodge diesel and never done a thing to it in 2 years other than change the brakes. Maybe I just need to sell this thing and look for an older one:) .

Save a buck.

Mine was doing the same exact thing.

All I did was change the transmission Fluid and a new Transmission Filter. :D

This will work till your ready to spend over $3,000 for a replacement.

I've put over 10,000 since fluid change and hasn't repeated that problem yet. Hopefully I'll get another 30-45k before rebuilding.

Good Luck
