My 1997 12-valve, automatic transmission, truck with 187K miles sometimes will not shift into Drive or Reverse. It happends less often when the engine is fully warm. The shifter will move, but not the vehicle. Not other serious transmission issues. Is it likely that adjusting the linkage will help ? What about that Lucas additive ? What signals the need for replacing the transmission? Any recommendations for transmission repair in the Virginia Shenandoah Valley area ?

Reverse and drive have a common element, that is the front clutch.

I assume the OD doesn't work also.

Rebuild time.

have the bands ever been adjusted? you might be able to scrap buy for a little longer with a band adjustment... i do not think its a linkage problem though.

I have a '97 that I just had the transmission rebuilt. I was told that they were good for about 130k to 140k before in need of some serious TLC. As JohnBoy5 said an adjustment might get you by, as it did me with 132k but after what I saw in the bottom of the pan, I could've sold for scrap to pay for the rebuild. Also a note of caution... if you do plan to rebuild or even replace do your self a favor & replace the transmission line that has the rubber link in it. That's what keeps the T/C from draining dry. Mine exploded 2 months after & $600 later (after the first $3600) all is well. Spend what you want but a extra $136 for a new line is good insurance.
