2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Ran out of fuel...

Last night I changed the fluid and put in a Drain Plug kit in my 2000 QC Shortbed. While I was in "There" I readjusted the bands. I did it to the "Book" and to this site: http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/automatic/AT_band_adj.htm

On the way home, I noticed that the 2-3 shift was "delayed", then it would hook up nicely. I am wondering if I misadjusted the Front band to loosely. As in, "If the front band releases too early in the shift, the engine will over speed (sounds and feels like a slip) during the 2-3 shift. " Also that page had a line, "From Bill Konolday's 47RE notes: I usually go a little looser than factory specs on this front band - backing off the adjustment screw 2 or 2 1/4 turns. Depending on the circumstances I have backed off the band up to 2 1/2 turns. " Hey, If a Konolday says to go looser on this band, then who am I , just a Big Dumb Moose, to Argue?

So, The question I have now is, "If the specs call for 1 and 7/8 turns, Can I turn that adjustment in 1/8 of a turn?" Or should I go back to my friend's place and borrow his 0-100"Lb Torque Wrench and do the Front band thing from scratch?

Minor Rantage

Some other minor rants: #@$%! 1; Why does the Mopar manual call out adding 1 1/2 pints ATF for the pan change, then have you add ATF in 1/2 Quart increments? Would it be easier to add 3 Quarts right off, then warm it up and check it? Next time, 3 Quarts ATF right off the bat! :)

2; Where did the rest of the TDR people put their Geno's Drain plug? Mine went on the rear side of the pan by the Magnet. I have to save some $$$. 00 for a Mag HyTech or a PMB

3; The Trans Cooler lines look they are made out of Aluminum? End of Rants  Moose00 Oo.

I think if it was loose you would have a slight overrun between shifts. With it to tight you'll experience a 2-3 tie-up which would feel like a drag for a split second.

readjust the front band. I used to use 2 turns as it's easier to get right. Make a mark on the bolt and tighten the locknut. Make sure it doesn't turn in on you. White out works great and will ususally remove itself before the next service.

Sounds like you are low on fluid more than anything else. Add 1/2 quart and go for a ride. I have had to "overfill" a little when comparing to the dipstick. If I remember correctly, Kondolay even says to use the back of the stick for fluid level.

We say, 72 inch lbs in back off two turns, just like fishin said. Get the torque wrench and make sure .

Let's see if I'm right after you pull apart my trans and start adding billet! :-laf

Is 20 psi launches too much for stock shafts? Oops, sorry for the hijack!!!

It's Right on now!!

April 5, 2006... I turned the Fwd band adjustment in 1/8 of a turn. Shifts nice now. Also, the transmission fluid was down a 1/2 Quart after I got back from the test ride. I can swear that it was OK after I drove it Saturday and again Monday:confused: Must have been a big air bubble in the cooler or something.

#@$%! Rantage: Why does the dip stick read two different levels at the same time?? End Rant ;)

Thanks for the help guys... Moose00 Oo.

Moose, I started a topic on this very subject some time ago and pretty much got laughed at. If you are seeing two different levels on the trans stick your fluid level is still low. I finally decided to end the mystery once and for all and started adding fluid 1/2 a quart at a time with the expectation of pumping the excess fluid out when the trans finally became overfull. When the trans is full both sides of the stick will read the same. Also be sure you check fluid level with the engine idling and trans in neutral not park. If you check it in park the level will read too high.

Good luck.

Not to ask a stupid question but... . is the front band adjustment the one that is adjusted from outside on the trans case? My trans hangs between second/third sometimes with light throttle. I have a DTT and want to get it from doing this. (Read signature below)

Chris, I check the fluid with the motor running in nuetral, transmission warmed up.

Motorhead, The Fwd band is the one ou side of the case. If you have a DTT it should be two turns loose from 72" lbs, per the Kondolays. See the above post #4 & 5. Moose00
