Archived Transmission Banging

Had the truck towed today. I was driving along, went to hammer down flipped the valet switch, pushed down, and bang, thud, thud, thud, thud, thud. I was in fifth gear. transmission still works in all gears, it just bangs a lot, and is difficult to get into 5th and reverse. Could fifth gear being part way off the main shaft cause this problem? fifth gear still works which is why I am confused. I already have the 1-3/8 input shaft. . don't think its broken. Any ideas?

Just pulled both side covers of the transmission. Can't see anything wrong, the fluid came out relativly clean. It really is banging with the T-case in Nuetral and the transmission in any gear. Backing up the driveway I was extremely cautious, going real slow, the truck would sort of hang up and want to move forward instead of backward (This was with the clutch in). Any ideas would be appreciated. I guess the teardown begins tommarow... I sure hope it doesn't start snowing again.

The only time I've ever experienced that was with a buddies Cheb 4X4. It was the transfer case.
