I need help - my trans, 2004. 5 48RE 105,000 miles has been making noise, Roaring, Howling, whatever you want to call it. I was convinced the source was planetary gears, as I recently did a filter & fluid change, and found a significant amount of gray dust on the pan magnet.

After consulting several trans experts, including Suncoast they are telling me the most likely source of this noise & problem is a Bearing in the tail (OD ? ).

Anyone had similar problem ? Comments & advice welcome.

If anyone has pictures of the location of this Bearing, Thanks Glen

This would be the bearig they are talking about, but, its rare that they go out unless you are dragging some big loads constantly or a defect.

Same with the planetaries, they are all steel now and stand up quite well to normal use.

Recently had the output shaft bearing replaced. I guess that is the one shown? Had 299k miles on bearing with about 90k miles towing RV's.

Update - Trans Bearing Question

The good news is the "Roaring" sound I was hearing was not my 48RE Transmission.

Friday, 10/09 I took it to the dealer. Mech test drove it, said it was front wheel bearing noise. They fixed it - No more noise!!

I guess I got off easy, two Hub assembly's $419 each plus labor & tax

total $1,140 what do you guy's think ? did I get ripped ??

Yep... also did they check the Axle joints, Ball joints, Most Dealer techs BTS out of the cradle and destroy the other componets... if it was torn down earlier for some reason that may have destroyed the wheel bearings. . well I can't remeber the # of times I have seen that at shops... We charge I think $960.
