Transmission Build

So i was finally sold to get my 48re built by Goerand trans. then when i'm ready to pull trigger i call and they tell me they don't build transmissions anymore. so my quest continued and I looked at so many websites and reviews i'm so torn what to do now. There is no one in my area (New york) who builds diesel transmissions. so I have to order out. I've looked at Dynatech who supposedly builds for goerand now with all goerand parts. I've looked at fire punk, suncoast, ATO trans, revmax, and all the others. most people say goerand builds the best parts. I am just looking for the best builder who stands behind there work and puts out a quality product.

let me know what you guys think and if anyone has any feedback on dynatech.

Goerend will give you a builder that uses their parts and is reputable call and ask them. Yes I do agree they are the best

Goerend parts are the same as everyone else uses, except the parts in his converters. Any builder has their own warranty and it just depends on what problems you could have. Any of them may or may not warranty for problems depending on the actual issue.

You will have to decide if you want a local person\place to deal with if there are issues or do it long distance. Not and easy or given choice.

If you are looking for a built or performance transmssion expecting warranty on anything expect workmanship is optimistic. An absolute warranty on everything that could go wrong just doesn't exist. All a matter of what you want and how you want to deal with potential future issues.

A good compromise is find a local builder that will work with you on parts and performance you want and be willing to deal with a vendor of your choice. That takes some leg work, interviewing, and ngeotiation skills.

I understand the warranty process and that it only goes so far. the problem is that i live in southern new york, diesel pick up trucks are not super common and there are no transmission shops that really specialize in that type of builds. I was locked into goerend based on their reputation and great reviews. I called them again and it turns out they aren't using Dynotec transmission anymore, (that didn't last long) no they are using Midwest Transmission supply. I am pretty much locked into mail ordering a transmission at this point. I just want to make the right $5000 decision. my goal is to get the truck to the 650hp daily driver level and i want a trans that i don't have to worry about when I'm towing 500 miles from home. I'm open to any recommendations at this point.

Part of a new transmission is installing and setting it up correctly in the vehicle. I have read a few hoar stories of addressing issues on a transmission shipped to the customer for installation by someone else.

I faced a similar issue earlier this year with my 10 year old DTT transmission. I could have delivered it back to them to rebuilt again and returned to be installed locally. However I search around a lot and asked a lot of question for diesel performance shops and found a good builder 40 miles away. It has worked out just fine. He fixed a leaking rear seal on the transfer case and R&R the TC to get one with the correct stall speed when the first one was not right.

So I say deal with one place for everything.

BTW how to you like the toy at 285/75/17's? I was going to order the same size in the newer too at2's. I have 35" mt's now ant it's too much.

I would go to TRE as matter of choice. There are others also but in your area they are the best I know of.

I didn't realize those tires were still listed. I have been running the 295/70/17 tires in various makes. Fills out the fenderwell better and is about the right compromise for effieciency\power. That size puts me at 70-73 mph at 1900-2000 rpms and ashade over 2100 at 75. With the 3.73's and a mild tune that chnages the fuel curve it is about as optimal a combo I have found.

If you want an AT consider the Falken Rocky Mtn ATS tires. Good traction and road manners, wear seems to be better the the Toyo AT's. The AT II's are supposed to be better but they seem to be hit or miss on tire wear.

I would also check out BD power and look into having a complete trans shipped to you, and then return your old one as a core; or if you have time, you could ship them yours to rebuild.

Two other AT tires to consider are Nitto Terra Grappler G2 and Cooper Discoverer A/T3.

I would give Pat at Level 10 Transmissions in Hamburg,NJ a call (973-827-7846).He built one of my 03's back in 2007, ( around $6,000.00 dollars),at the time the truck had 62,000 miles on it and as of today it has over 147,000 miles on it. The transmission shifts and runs just as good as it did after I picked it up back in 2007. A lot of trailer pulling during the summer months and plowing during the winter. Also. another vendor I used in the past for transmission work was from Auto Works Diesel in Caldwell, NJ. Mike, mostly does performance work to diesel engines. He installed a Sun coast transmission in my 1992 about twelve years ago, that transmission is also still running just as it did when first installed. If I had any further transmission issues with any of my trucks, I would call Pat at Level 10. He only specializes in performance transmissions and stands behind his work. Good luck. Frank

Tim Barber is a former TDR member and builds one of the best transmissions on the East Coast.You will not find a more honest man and his shop will do the job you need or want done.As already stated,there are many people who drive along way to have their work performed by this shop.........Andy

A very SMART move. I got less than 100,000 and only 28 months out of my dtt built. (4 months past warranty) I only wish I would have taken to Mike at North State Auto / Shiftworks in Marysville originally. The endless lack of customer support and driveabilty issues experienced just several months new, far outweighed any money savings dealing with an out of country company. Lesson learned the expensive and hard way.

there are so many shops with good feedback it is such a tough choice.

Ok I am in Washington, Puget Sound area, and have talked to a couple local places, I am not getting a warm fuzzy from the ones I have talked to. I prefer to use some quality parts of my choice, and have a local builder to the actual rebuild and install, and support after if any issues arise. Any recommendations on Pacific Northwest Transmission builder from experience or knowledge firsthand? I'm about ready to just do some maintenance instead, it's easier than dropping $7k+ ( I was quoted $9k too) to get my trans to handle 600+ HP.
