One of the things as I re read these threads, do we KNOW what "too hot" at the crossover port is from a transmission guy? We know what we have read about 200+ but is that in the crossover port or at the pan?



I think the difference in temp between the crossover port and the pan can be significant. 220 in the pan could be horribly too hot, but 220 at the crossover port could be well within llimits(whatever within limits means)



I am going to monitor both the crossover and pan to see what the difference is. I am also going to take the one way check valve out of the transmission lube circuit for better fluid flow (which means that I HAVE to idle my stock transmission in NEUTRAL for 40 seconds to fully charge the TC and lube circuit on the first start in the morning or if it has been sitting for an extended period of time). Not make any other changes and see what that gives as far as crossover temps and pan temps.



Has anyone done a Horton clutch or an electric full radiator fan? If so how did that effect your water, transmission, intake manifold air temps? What temp setting did the fan kick in at?

When I mentioned the difference in heat on the radiator face it was cold to too hot to touch. I know the radiator is not that efficient in removing heat.

Most people talk of high trans temp are reading the temp from the crossover port. I am not concerned about the trans fluid temp in the double deep Mag-Hy-tec pan but what the very hot fluid is doing to engine temp, inability of air conditioner to cool on 110-120* deg days towing trailers let alone the intercooler being able to cool the charge air.

Where is Jburnes with his ideas on the Derale remote cooler possibly pre-cooling the fluid before it goes to the water to oil cooler.

Keith, I cut and flared the return line coming from the factory cooler to the transmission. The cut was made 4" before the last 90 degree turn going into the transmission. This allowed me to run a line to the rear of the truck and return it to the 90 degree line, as I turned it towards the rear and tightened it back up. My cooler is located between the wheelwell (drivers side) and the front of the bed. It is at a 45 degree angle and has a rock shield protecting it. I will try to get you a digital pic of my set up. I placed it there for good air flow and made my own straps to support it. The interchanger that you mentioned can be by-passed by just running your own hose and reconfiguring your lines. That's my next project. Some other TDR guys have mentioned it too.

Keith, I have not had a chance to operate my truck and 5thW in high temps yet. I put the cooler on in Late Oct '02. I have been most concerned with transmission temps and felt that if the factory (HA!) engineers decided to cool on the return side of the transmission so should I. I realize that all integrity may be lost on the engineer statement but I also believe that the pressure is lower on the return side causing less chance of blowing a line. Don't quote me on that, but I think that's what I recall. I know the fluid in the water/transmission exchanger passes through rather quickly and I have a hard time believing that the normal cooling of the engine is effected by the transmission temps (ie overall radiator size comparison). I do believe the engine temps have a greater affect on the transmission temps. In cold weather areas the engine temp is used to warm the transmission fluid. If the pressure is different from side to side the cooler may need to have a different configuration because it is important the fluid has enough time to dissipate the heat as it passes through the aux cooler. Just a thought
