transmission cooler

I have a very annoying leak in the transmission cooler of my '05. I spoke with a service guy at a dealership about ordering a new cooler. He said there is a national back order on these parts because they are no longer making them. It may be weeks before I can get one. A friend of mine is trying to order one from a dealership that supposedly has five of them. But I hate relying on others to get my parts. Anyone know anything about this back order or any other ideas on how to snag one? I have towing to do! TIA.

Why not go with a better aftermarket cooler? I realize they may not be as cheap, but there are many options.

Actually, I was not going to tell that part of the story... but. I ordered a ATS cooler through the shop that does my work for me. When it arrived I was all excited so I just dropped the truck off and expected it to be done in a day. That's when my mechanic called me and said "You realize that the ATS cooler is only supposed to be used as an auxilliary cooler. Not a replacement. " Um no, I didn't realize that. Serves me for not doing a little research. I'm gonna have the ATS cooler put on anyway but I still need a replacement. Any that you know of that are a direct replacement?

hmmm, good point. Especially since you are going to be doing some towing. I assumed that you could replace your OEM cooler with an after-market fan cooled unit and it would cool better. I guess the only way to know is if you have a trans temp sensor.



Maybe if you put 2 or 3 of those ATS units on??? :-laf

I have a secondary cooler, and also have had the stock one out, the stock one has special sized mounting tabs, could be hard to find something that bolts in. Why not remove the bad one, and take it to a radiator shop for repair?.

I guess B&M makes one that is very close to a drop in replacement. I don't get that one 'til Tuesday so we'll see how that goes.

Are you looking for the cooler on the side of the block, or one in front of the radiator? If it is the PN 52028915AC (AD, AE) there are only 4 left at dealers in the country.

I was trying to get the one in front of the radiator. You're numbers are pretty much dead on with what my guy found. Every one he found was spoken for. Dealership in Louisiana had five of them. Parts desk said they've been getting non-stop calls for them.

The part number for B&M's is #70264. It's supposed to be good up to 24,000 GVWR. I think the website is bmracing.com

Does anyone have an update to this transmission cooler? I would like to know if the B&M cooler worked.

When my mechanic received the B&M cooler, he could not believe how small it was. He just did not feel comfortable putting it on the truck. He ended up getting me a B&M cooler that was like two sizes bigger than that part number I gave above. It was alot closer to the size of the oem cooler. He said it was good for GVWR up to 40,000lbs. I've driven the truck about 50 miles since getting it done. So far the temp hasn't hardly come out of the basement, just over 140. I'll be doing my first towing with it today.

I am interested in your results as well, did you also install the ATS unit? This would be a good combo to have if it keeps the tans fluid cooler than a stock unit with the option of kicking on the fan on the ATS unit for even more cooling.

Towing update:

I did about 100 miles round trip today with about 10,000 lbs (skid steer and trailer). A little was stop and go in traffic and about 75 degrees outside. While driving the temp gauge never went over 170. It idled for about 20 minutes while I yapped with a neighboring farmer. Got back in the truck and was lookin' at just over 200 degrees. Got back out to make sure the fan was running (it was) and drove away. 10 minutes of driving and it was back down to 170. Fan kicks on at 180 by the way.

Part number for the cooler I ended up with is #70274 (29,200 BTU). Website (bmracing.com) says it is no longer available on their e-store and to call for availability. It is not exactly a drop-in replacement. My guy mounted it in the stock location but had to fabricate a mount for it just using a couple pieces of 1/4" aluminum. He also had do something with the fittings to make them work with the stock lines.

Yes, I did have the ATS aux. cooler put on as well and the fan did cool it down pretty good. Note: Although the box that the aux. cooler came in had "ATS" masking tape on it, actual manufacturer was "DERAIL" never heard of them, we'll see. I like ATS stuff alot but I was a little put off by that.
