What is a good auxillary transmission cooler? Are they generally installed in-line? This install be cheaper than a tc upgrade if ones only problem is high transmission temps when pulling. But would it be a viable solution?

Here's the one I used for the 47RE in my 1996 3500 V-10 when we were towing our 30' and later our 36' 5th wheels with that truck:

Transmission Cooler (ordered from Carparts.com) - B&M SuperCooler #70266 - $61. 67

The 47RE uses 1/2" lines, so just any "off the shelf" cooler won't work. The cooler above has 1/2" NPT supply and discharge ports. I plumbed mine with suitably rated Aeroquip hose and fittings. Since one objective was to take much of the transmission heat load off of the V-10 engine cooling system, I plumbed the new cooler into the "hot" line that came out of the transmission and went straight to the bottom port on the radiator tank on the V-10. Therefore, the fluid left the transmission, went through the new B&M cooler, then the radiator tank cooler, then the factory towing package oil-to-air cooler, then back to the transmission.

Changing the transmission fluid & filter and adjusting bands every 12K miles, I never had any problems with the stock 47RE with this setup. YMMV with the Cummins!
