I am researching this issue because when towing my toy hauler that weighs 11300 travel trailer I see temps in the output line of over 200 all the time. Especially when in traffic or parking. I have an auto and even using tow/haul mode I have no control over torque converter lock up. The trans cooler seems very small. I don't think I should have to replace the trans cooler on a one ton truck. Could my Torque converter be bad? How would I know? I actually pegged the trans temp gauge on our way into Yellowstone. Quite frighting!!!! I do use Amsoil.

Use a good synthetic fluid and do not worry about it. Like I said, high temps at the output line for a short period are not a big issue. With more coolers, you will see the same high temps there. I have a probe in both the pan and output. In situations like that, spotting a trailer or freeway stop and go, the output line will climb fast, but my pan temp remains low.

If the output starts going pass 300 stop what you are doing and cool it down. Buy another probe and put a switch between the two and you will see what I am talking about. The real damage to an auto is when the whole transmission goes above 230 or so. Like I said, use a good synthetic and enjoy. Call Dave or Bill and see if they agree. BTW way, the warmest I have every seen my pan was in the SW in 100 degree weather pulling hard in 3rd for 15 miles up a long grade, and it when to 170.

SNOKING

Could you explain how you put a switch in for the two sensors? Some of us are a little less mechanical than others. :D

The probes use the screw in mount as ground and a single wire from the probe to the meter. So all you need is a simple double throw single pole switch hooking the common of the switch to the meter and the two inputs to the two probes. SNOKING

You may have an issue with your TC lockup! SNOKING

I think you meant SPDT so you could read both inputs on switch end and on the common terminal ... . you send to the gauge itself.

Anyway... if you are towing that kind of weight,I agree with Snoking... . get a TC lock-up controller. If you find yourself in 2nd gear pulling grades... I would also suggest an aftermarket VB that you can lock-up in the lower gears. Very expensive alternative but for the ultimate in driver control,it is hard to beat. I have the ATS equipment and have been very satisfied!Factory lock-up is only down to 3rd with Tow/Haul switch activated. The factory computer will only lock in 3rd with button pushed. It was also very annoying when you lifted foot off of accelerator and the convertor un-locked. By the time the factory computer locked back up you needed to start back down to a lower gear... PITA!!

I wasn't picking on you Snoking,I knew exactly what you meant... I just didn't want them to accidently buy the wrong switch.

Well I appreciate the advice, But ATS is more money than my wife will allow me to spend. I will have to wait till it explodes and then I will up grade the trans, TQ, and controller probably with exhaust brake. Until then I will get and extra probe and a switch. Thanks again for the input.
