Have any of you guys had this problem losing the detents between R and N and also between N and D on your auto. Am i out of adjustment or linkages or is it in the transmission housing where that little ball with the spring sits on the selector linkage , kinda freaking me out don't want to miss a gear and F?*&^ up the transmission :--)

The detents are behind the rooster comb in the trans. Mine got some wear and popped the ball and spring out ( found them in the pan on a filter change). I used parts from an old 727 trans to replace.

DON'T DRIVE IT LIKE THIS!!!

You will ruin it.

I had a guy who brought me his chevy t-400 transmission ro rebuild and found the detent missing. I fixed it and rebuilt it. That was the first thing he complained about. He didn't like the detent.

About a month later he cam by and said the transmission failed. I asked him about the detent, He said he removed it and it has nothing to do with the failure!!!

Then about 3 months later his boss asked me rebuild a 727. It had the detents missing!!! It was easy to figure out!!

Fox,

I know almost nothing about auto trannys. Is the link between this problem and transmission failure because you end up with fluid trying to go in different directions at the same time?

Just curious.

Is the problem in the trans or the steering column?

Block the wheels and unhook the shift linkage at the trans. Shift the linkage manually on the trans and see if the detents in the trans are working.

I think your talking about the column detents myself.

The problem is in the transmision and at the ' rooster comb' , on the VB.

Yes it is from the manual valve being in the wrong position and allowing a ' cross leak '.

Drop the VB to fix it. It is a trying experience for a beginner, but you can do it. If you can find the Spring and ball.

here is something else i found i can't get overdrive at all so it must be the spring and ball causeing fluid to go different directions and not the last gear and you guys are saying it will ruin the transmission boy that sucks anymore info will be apreciated it will sit until i get the money to drop the pan a VB

One too many detents?

On my 518, The "D" position is there, but it does not do anything except act like a second "N". I have to shift it into 2nd to get it into Drive. Yes It will shift into all four gears in this postion.

Why do I have what seems to be an extra Neutral detent?

Don

Don, the throw on your shifter linkage doesn't match the throw needed to move the detents in the trans the correct amount. Thats pretty much normal in a conversion unless you change some things. It doesn't hurt anything as long as the detent positions will engage correctly. Just don't go by your indicator, feel for the detent.

My truck's shifter indicator is not correct. I have bent the tab, only to find that it throws off the pointer for another position. AUGH! Oh Well... .....

well got the truck in the garage got the pan off and found the ball no spring started to take the VB out removed all bolts and for some reason it wont come out don't know what else to try its looose but just won't drop out it looks like the shifting rod from the outside of the transmission is holding it but i can't tell any other ideas guys need some help here

detent

No help. but another question. On my 92, when I shift to park it hangs in the park detent so that I have to jerk it out of park. Anyone had this problem?

The shift linkage and the throttle valve cable is holding it also. You need to remove those two items.

The parking pawl rod is on the top side of the valve body. It should pull out of its socket with a small tug. Then the valve body should drop down and out.

1stgen is the shifter handle moving back and forwards with little effort? I have seen a shift collor binding on the shift tube cause that problem before. The detents in the column will hang onto each other.

Your truck has moved slightly after you placed the transmission in "Park" which puts pressure on the parking pawl inside the transmission. To avoid the difficulty of getting out of "Park", always set your parking brake before shifting the transmission into "Park". I got into that habit when I owned my '92 and still do it on my '03.

If you saw the small size of the parking pawl, you wouldn't "trust" it be the only thing holding your truck from rolling down the hill!

new problem all back toghther no gears at all found that the bracket where the ball and spring was worn which allows some angle that is where the ball falls out like i said all back toghther and have no gears the only thing i can think of that is guestionable is the spring and plastic valve on the passenger side that fell out when the valve body came out don't know if the oreintation is correct right now i have the spring on the bottom with the plastic piece on topwith the little end inside the spring. Truck is stuck until i drop the pan again and get this figured out thanks guys

we still no go something is binding in the valve body as far as i can tell had then VB in and out 30 different times still couldn't find out what was binding im the VB going to get it towed to a transmission shop and have them look at it good time for new VB i was thinking of ATS not sure for racing or hauling any seggestions was also think of of a switch for lock up

The rooster comb is swedged onto the shift shaft. The diesels are heavy! what happens in the swedging comes loose on the shift shaft allowing the rooster to move up and down. This allows the detent ball and spring.

What causes the swedging to come loose is from parking on hills putting presure on the park paw. This requires a lot of force on the rooster and shift lever to jerk it out of park.

To repair this you will need to drop the pan and the valve body. Then remove the rooster comb and weld the swedging or just order a new rooster comb and install it.

Moral of the story:... ... stop getting midevil on the shifter and apply the parking brake before you put it in park!

If you do not fix the problem and keep driving the truck you will blow the trans from cross leaks

well gotallback toghter still no go parked until i come home will try to get the parts this week, new rooster comb and maybe a new ats VB some thing is hanging i don't think that is it i fixed the swedging so that wasn't it was rubbing on the top of the vb but still something still not go and no truck so we will see when i get home after the 13th will check on here now and then
