Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transmission & diff lubricants-any reccomendations?

I have a 99 2500. I need to change differential fluid and transmission(nv4500)fluid. the shop manual says only dodge P/N4874459 fluid for the trans, no other equal . Dodge wants 16. 50/quart. Is there any aftermarket equal fluid for this trans?



The diff says 80w-90 GL5 with 7 oz of friction modifier ( trac-loc diff). What are you guys using? This is a work truck, with 8500# normal weight. Thanks for your time to reply.

Well, I also have a 99 and basically asked the same questions when it came time to change the differentials. I began looking for synthetic alternates and nobody carried them in my area (the boonies). I finally decided to buy from AMSOIL and became a distributor to get roughly a 25% discount. I now use their Series 2000 75W90 in both the differentials and transmission. Costs me $7. 20/qt plus tax and shipping. I also use their 15w40 engine oil and ATF in my transfer case. I used amsoil series 2000 ever since about 40,000 miles and at about 160-170,000 miles it started getting hard to get into 3rd gear unless I let it idle down quite a bit, I don't know what the problem is, maybe a synchronizer or something. I now use redline, now I'm not saying for sure that the Amsoil caused this but I did switch to redline because it is an actual GL-4 oil, I know amsoil does meet the GL-4 specs but it also meets GL-5 also which has a lot more sulfur and phosphorus which I've heard can be hard on the synchronizers, So feel free to use what you want but, If I had it to do over again I would have done more research and either used the redline or went to the dealer and got the castrol.



Be careful not to cost yourself hundreds or maybe even thousands to save a few bucks
