While showing my new Cummins to my Ford buddy, I noticed the transmission dip stick tube was rubbing against the high pressure side a/c line. It lookes like it could wear through in short time. It also could be the source of the rattle when we go into O/D under load with the automatics. I pushed mine over some and it clears it now but I'll tie rap a sleave of rubber around both this weekend.

Same old problem. Dodge has been doing this for years with the 47RE, had to bend the one on my '98. And the dipstick backs out with vibration. You would think they would get a clue on this item. Toyota for years has put a small clip on the end of the tube to keep the dipstick in.

My '95 and '01. 5 were both automatics and had the dipstick that didn't want to stay put but weren't rubbbing anything. My '98 was a 5spd. :D My '03 stays put but was rubbing the a/c line. I showed it to the service writer today while I was having my tires rebalanced. He said they would fix it but I declined. I'd rather take care of it myself.

Steve M - According to DC and Cummins the noise you hear when shifting to OD under load is the wastegate in the turbo. So far both are saying there is currently no fix. When I brought my truck to the dealer and took the tech for a drive, he thought it may have been the transmission dipstick. He zip-tied some padding around the tube but I still have the noise and was subsequently told that it was the turbo. FYI.

I'll have to agree with you on the waste gate flappin'. My concern is that the dipstick tube rubbed a mark on the a/c line deep enough to feel with my finger. But I'd rather take my chances on the a/c line than have them discharge and replace the line. So I'll wrap something around it to protect it. I mainly wanted to point it out so others might prevent a trip to the dealer for a leaking a/c line. I pushed the dipstick tube over enough to clear it and still heard the wastegate flapping when it shifted to O/D under moderately heavy throttle. It was a thought... ;)
