Transmission Dipstick -How long?

Anybody out there who knows the procedure for checking the dipstick length on the 1992 o/d automatic trans?

How far above or below the transmission pan rail should the "Full" mark be?

We have a transmission that is weeping some ATF out of the inspection cover, and I'm suspecting the trans, fluid level might be too high, causing it to blow some out the vent.

The trans. has been re-sealed and re-gasketed and the leak is very small. We seldom see a spot on the drive, but if we get underneath the area around the bottom cover on the bell/converter housing is wet. The outside converter is dry, which indicates to me the front seal is OK. Wiping a finger inside the housing gets just a small film of oil on my finger.

The auto trans needs to be checked at operating temp in neutral - don't know if this is what you want or need.

I've got a good freind who has a '93 with an auto. When he gets home later today I can measure it and let you know.

The '93 auto dip stick is 24 inches long - from the tip of the stick up to the rubber seal at the top.

Thanks for the info. I spent some time today trying to find a dipstick & tube for a 92 diesel. no Luck.
I am familiar with the procedure for checking transmission fluid level. 45 years as a professional mechanic, lots of experience with Torqueflite transmissions.
As Cool Hand Luke said, "What we have here is a failure to communicate. " My fault. Let me try again.

My brother and I refurbished his 1986 Dodge D-250 and installed a Cummins with automatic-O/D trans. We purchased the trans. without a dipstick and tube.
We installed the transmission using the dipstick & tube from the 360 CID gas engine/auto trans. we removed. It is much shorter (18") but so is the tube. In fact, it is very hard to reach, check, and add fluid.
I think the reading should be correct, as the basic transmission design is the same, but I'm not positive.

What I'm looking for is information on where the operating fluid level is-relative to the transmission pan rail- (i. e. 1/4"-or whatever- above or below the pan rail) and concurrently, where the "Full" mark on the dipstick is relative to the pan rail. Then I can drop the pan, and measure the dipstick mark relative to the pan rail on our transmission.

Also, if any member has a correct dipstick & tube they would like to sell, please P/M me.

I have heard that a 2nd gen dip stick & tube will work on a 1st gen. It was suggested to someone I know to be able to use a 2nd gen down pipe with an auto transmission - don't know if this is correct.

Jack, I don''t think there is a any difference on a non-lockup transmission as long as the tube and stick are matched, but, you never know for sure.

You could check here http://atransmission.info/dodge-transmission-parts.html and Lokar Performance and see if they have one by application.

I have a slightly different problem in finding the correct one for a 47RH that will fit. I have a slightly used 518 tube and stick for a 93 if you just can't find something. I need to find a 47RH tube and make sure it fits correctly first though.
