Has anyone had problems with the 47RE after it sits overnight or for a long period of time not wanting to go anywhere? I have to sit with it in neutral for about 30 seconds. I assume the transmission is having to pick up fluid. Is there an anti-drainback valve somewhere in the system?
If you take it to the dealer, you'll be told TADTS - "They all do that, sir. " My 1996 3500 V-10/47RE took about 2-3 days for the torque converter to drain down, but they vary. Just idle it in neutral and let the pump fill it up.
Sarcasm aside, there is a "check valve" in the cooling line that goes bad so frequently that many transmission rebuilders leave it out when they upgrade. As long as the valve is stuck open, it causes no problems beyond having to wait a few seconds before driving off for the TC to fill up. A problem could occur if the valve is plugged with debris or ? You should have it in neutral while you wait since it doesn't pump into the TC in park.
Some say it is better to not have the check valve as it removes a restriction to fluid flow. Of course you have to wait the 30 seconds to start moving. I should have removed mine during the last service but forgot.
The valve consists af a small ball, spring and retaining washer that sits inside the fitting that attaches the transmission cooler line to the rear connection of the coolant/fluid cooler on the passenger side rear of the block. I removed mine when I rebuilt my trans. It is easy to remove by prying out the retainer and removing the ball and spring.
Even with the 48RE valve body in my 47RE trans I still get drainback after the truck sits for a while. I start in neutral and it fills faster than stock did now. The built valve body is supposed to correct this but I think it is part of the original design and we have to live with it. It does fill when in park where it did not before the build, but neutral is still much faster.
I removed mine because of the restriction in the line.
Mine started doing that after I put in a Trans Go kit and drilled the valve body to get lube and cooler in park. I did not remove the check valve but I might at the next oil change.
Didn't offend me. I though it was pretty funny. Obviously you are a glass is half full type person. I guess it is a safety feature is a good way of looking at it.
Mine sits more than it drives too. But I have noticed that when it sits there is trans fluid weeping out of the front band adjusting screw. If the truck gets driven every day this does not happen.
Does any one else have this problem,or know a fix?
