Jumped in my truck this morning, put her in reverse no problem, moved it to first gear nothing happened. Clutch pedal seemed spongy, cannot get into any gear while engine is running. With engine stopped gears will move around.

Can anyone give me any idea on what the problem might be before I take it to the dealer.

Would really aprecciate any help.

Thanks.

Could be pilot bearing, throwout bearing, or the clutch slave/master cyl.

Given your description of 'spongy', think it is probably the slave/master cyl.

I changed mine 2 weeks ago for same issue. The dealer unit is a sealed complete unit from the factory - even includes a new reservoir. Napa will sell the pieces but there is no bleed valves and you can choose to fiddle with bleeding for the next 2 weeks, or get the unit from the dealer like I did - $220.

With mine, I could hear fluid recirculating inside the master cylinder when pressing on the pedal, and the reservoir was overfilled with fluid.

Takes about 30 minutes to change - pop the master cyl pushrod clip off, two bolts under the dash, two bolts on the bellhousing, and two screws on the firewall for the reservoir.

The new designed units even have a quick-connect joint by the slave cylinder so you don't have to try and feed that part down between the firewall and the bellhousing. It also comes with all new clips so don't worry about breaking the old ones getting the old unit out.

Thanks for the quick response nps.

I had my truck towed to the dealership where I bought it from because no one else could find the parts for it. (long story). You were right they told me it is the slave/cyl. No parts available in Ontario where I live, but three in Vancouver BC. It will take three days for them to get the parts shipped. This is the one piece unit you spoke about. It is $260 Canadian so if you are right in telling me it only takes about 30 minutes to install I am getting ripped off Because they told me the bill will be around $530 plus taxes which is another 15% so it looks like I am being charged way too much for labour. Not much I can do about it as I need to get the truck fixed as soon as I can.

Thanks for listening to me

Well, 30 minutes for a 47 year old who creaks when crawling under the dash to unbolt the cylinder and pop the pushrod. Maybe it takes one of these young dealer techs longer. :-laf

Seriously, mine is a 4x4 so I didn't have to jack it up to change. Figure 15/20 minutes for a dealer tech to get it on the lift might just make up the difference in time - whether they can crawl underneath it or not. Oh yeah, don't forget that it'll take them AT LEAST 30 minutes to push it into the bay from where ever the hook dropped it.

For $250+ have you considered just putting it on yourself? Real easy and can be done anywhere. Alternately, ask them to show you in the book what the standard time is for an R&R of the Master/Slave. Then multiply that by their published hourly rate, and ask them to explain the discrepancy.
