Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transmission Filter

I was wondering the other day.



Would it not make sense to run a hydraulic filter for the transmission and not worry about a filter on the valve body...



It would be nice to just drain the pan, replace a spin on filter and fill it back up... without dropping the pan.

I had a set-up like that on one of my Scout's... ... Summit Racing sells the kits for the spin on filter and remote mounting bracket. Just plumb it into the transmission cooler lines. IIRC, the filter on the valve body is replaced with a mesh screen unit. It's still wise to drop the pan and clean/ check the screen every so often.

I am putting together a kit as we speak. My first run will be the BD remote inline filter kit, however I will be running a much better filter.

Their filter -

Luber Finer , 50% effecient @20 microns

98. 67% @45 microns



My filter , 50% @ 7 microns

98. 67% @ 22 microns





Only catch is I HIGHLY recommend a trans temp gauge when using. If the filter clogs you will see an increase in temps due to lack of flow through cooler. Shouldn't be much of an issue if you do regular filter changes. Heck, with how inexpensive the filters are, plus you're only looking at 1 quart of ATF, not 10 (with a Mag Hytech), you can change them every 10k if you wanted. I am about to install one of these on my 2006.

I ran an inline filter on my last service truck,it did a nice job of filtering and allowed extending the change of the oe filter in the pan... ..... it stayed very clean

A couple of years ago I asked BK about a filter, his take:



NO, because you will not be as incline to drop the pan and visually check any deposits and do the band adjustments every 12k. Visual checking is an important part of transmission maintenance.
