Alright I now have 50,000 miles on my truck and its long over due for a transmission service. My question is, will i be ok to just change the fluid in the pan and do i bother changing the filter while i'm at it. Or should i do a total service, all fluids and filter.

My second issue is that now that i'm going to do the service to the transmission i believe it is now time to install the drain plug-transmission temp sensor in the pan. Where abouts on the pan should i drill the hole for it. Drivers side front of the pan, passenger side front of the pan or somewhere on the rear of the pan. Any help would be appreciated and can i just tap into the pan or is it not thick enough to get enough threads to be safe.

With 50k you should get as much of the old fluid out as possible. It is relatively easy to do.

The rear cooler line is the cooler return and will allow you drain the TC as you refill. Once you have the trans drained what you can from the pan, and yes replace the filter, fill the trans with about 5 quarts of new fluid then pull the rear cooler line and put a hose on the end of it and route it into a container. Start the truck in neutral, not park, and watch the fluid as it pump into the floor container. When you have what lookslike 5 quarts shut off the engine and refill. Repeat the process 3 times and you should have changed the fluid out completely.

Next subject, the temp sensor in the pan is useless and will not tell you when it is time to let up until way past when you should have. Drain plugs belong in the pan, sensors belong in the hot (front) cooler line. The easiest thing is cut the rubber line on the output and use the adapter from Genos.

You can drill trans pan on the truck and have a start for a drain plug install. The passenger side towards the rear and towards the bottom of the pan is the best place and free from internal pieces. Just make sure to position the hole between the pan bolts above it or you will have to work around the plug to tighten bolts. :)
