Fuel Pump Question ??

Is it worth it?

I know what it is and does but is there a way to take it out of the system on an automatic by replacing it with an "under bed" cooler, or something else? No real good reason, more curious than anything about the details of this item.

Thanks for any input.

P. S. The lines have been loosend, thus the "wet" look.

Hi Andrew,

To answer your question, yes you can pull and replace it with another cooler. The one you have pictured is really a "primary" cooler that is in essence a basic heat exchanger. It is supplied with rad coolant which in turn helps to start off the transmission oil cooling function. Basically though the engine coolant temp is no less than about 160*F to as high as 210*F or there-about, so the benefit of this initial cooler is a bit weak in terms of "significant" temp reduction. The real work is down by the front mounted cooler.

Our trucks actually had a rear mounted extra cooler that was an option. It was mounted under between the frame rail and the fender panel just behind the driver side and up against the box bulkhead.

So you can go that route with an aftermarket cooler in place of the 'cylindrical' heat exchanger unit if you want to.

I think this is more of a heat exchanger than a cooler, as this device will actually warm your trans oil up to coolant temp. A plus on cold mornings. I would think that removal of this device would cause the trans temp to stay cold longer, thus preventing the shift to overdrive in cold temps.

At least this is my understanding of this device, I could be incorrect in my assumptions.

Good Luck

heater/cooler

DMC was right on the money... . It is a heater as well as a cooler... If you live in Florida go ahead and take it out. If not I would leave it in... The rear servo in the auto transmissions has been known to go as high as 375 psi in extremely cold climates when dropped in reverse at high idle cold... . This has actually warped transmission cases and caused cross leaks between valve body circuits... . Enough said... . //

I've been running without this thing on da house (had to remove it because I went to a different exhaust manifold that swung the turbo down into that area). So far I haven't had any problems running without it, but da house is primarily a summertime cruiser anyways, and I just duct tape a rag over the "aluminum goatee" on the front if the transmission fluid temp doesn't wanna come up.
