I am installing a MagHytec Transmission pan (double deep version) on my dad's 96 this weekend. I know it increases the transmission capacity by 4 qts. The 47RE takes 6. 5 qts according to Dodgeram.org. So we are at 10. 5 qts. I have a brand new case of 12 qts of amsoil ATF on the shelf. I think that will just be enough for the job. I don't think the truck has a Torque convertor drain and i dont want to run the transmission lines dry since it is not good for the pump. Should i be okay mixing the fluid in the lines with the new amsoil ATF? Anyone ever had problems doing that?

How about taking your Amsoil to a shop with a flush machine would be the easyest, I don't think it worth the cost of the Amsoil to have only 1/3-1/2 in there , the 2 will mix , but thats why they came out with flush machine to change it all , I haven't tryed yet but it may work to undo the pressure line , but refilling at that rate mite be a pain , lets see what others say.

You might want to re-check the total amount of fluid you will need for that

transmission. Mine is a 47RH but I believe the fluid capacity would be the same for the 47RE.

The book says total capacity is 15. 4 quarts.

I think the 6. 5 quart figure is the amount needed for a routine transmission service.

Howard is right, better re-check. Also Amsoil says that there ATF is compatible with all other fluids.

But... ..... I wouldn't do it... ... I'd flush it and change it all.....

Eric: This is from the Amsoil website http://www.bestsynthetics.com

SERVICE LIFE

AMSOIL Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended for use up to 60,000 miles under severe service* and up to 100,000 miles under normal service* or according to the vehicle manufacturer recommended intervals, whichever is longer. AMSOIL recommends thoroughly draining the transmission and flushing with new AMSOIL ATF to achieve a minimum 90% purity of new transmission fluid. Drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis.

* As defined by the vehicle or transmission manufacturer.

This does primarily concern service life and they do say that thier ATF Synthetic is 100% compatible with other ATFs for use but considering the expense you'll reduce the "service life" by mixing... .

I change my transmission fluid approx every 15,000 at it takes right at 6 qts to refill when I change the filter. So with the mag-hytek I would say you would need 10-11 qts to do the change. As far as blending the old oil with the Amsoil, that should not be a problem. If the oil is really old it would probably be better to do the flush as is suggested above.

When I change mine I drain it when hot and let it sit overnight with the drain plug out. With the stock (RE/RH) pan it takes 10 quarts to refill. (I haven't done it since I added the B&M pan but that should add another 2)

The RH pans were 2 qts smaller than the RE pans. I'm not sure if the pan size was made at the RE/RH change or if it was sooner. My '94 came with the smaller pan but the replacement I bought from Dodge in '98 was the larger unit. (I know but the only improved trans parts in '98 was a back cut stator convertor)

As for changing or flushing, let it drain overnight. There will be a little left but it will still be WAY better than it is now. Change it again in 15,000 miles.
