My wonderful dealer overfilled my transmission fluid last spring! I never checked it and when I did lately, because of some problems I've had, I found it to be filled to where the bends are in the dipstick. I checked it on level ground, fully warm, in neutral, after a 22 mile run. Should I pump some out or am I splitting hairs here. I know it says "don't overfill". Do you think any harm was done? As you know from my previous posts I've had the TQ drainback problem but also it seems to get stuck in 1st gear pulling out of my driveway. I get it to 2000 rpms under moderate acceleration and it won't downshift under load. When I let my foot off the gas it shifts fine. Could the overfilled condition cause this?
 
Most "techs" just put a set amount in when they service a transmission - this is usually too much resulting in an overfull condition. I have seen most transmissions coming out of dealerships overfull. I have not seen any problems as a result of this. I would suggest you call your dealer and tell them you had the transmission serviced and it is overfull and see what they say. Just let them think you had it done somewhere else. The answer you get might be interesting.

I have always understood that an overfilled AT will cause much more damage than a underfilled one, in fact the DC service manual says the same thing. Get the extra out, easiest way is to use a suction device with a tube down the dipstick hole.
 
Talk to Dave Goerend at goerend@powerbank.net,I had this same question about 6 months ago and he helped me out of it. It won't hurt your trans to leave it in as long as it's not coming out of the breather, that's all I remember so talk to Dave and he will explain in detail why it won't hurt.

For what it's worth-



One of the first weird things I learned after buying my 1994 was that checking the transmission fluid level was a little more complicated than other vehicles. According to the owner's manual, the vehicle needs to be hot after a fairly long drive. You put the parking brake on, and keeping your foot on the brake, you slowly shift the truck through all gears and then back into park. You then wipe the stick off and check the level. Using this method, I would add until full.



Previously, I would just park the truck and check the stick. It always looked much fuller just checking the stick. I had some slippage even though the stick showed full so I got out my owner's manual and checked it right and it was low. I filled it correctly and the slippage went away.



I guess this is a long way of saying that you might want to check your owner's manual to make sure you're checking your fluid level correctly.
