One of my co-workers has recently suggested using 1/2 to a full quart of transmission fluid as engine flush during lube oil change. He states that it thoroughly cleans and flushes the top end of an engine to nearly a brand new look. Has anybody else heard of doing such a thing and/or does anybody have any insight on if this is good for the engine or will it do more damage than good? For those of you who do use transmission fluid do you suggest normal fluid or synthetic.

I do this once a year. I use a whole quart of plain jane ATF, no synthetic stuff, it doesn't work. This pretty much what the quick lube places do minus the extra cost. I drive around for an hour boosting so the turbo line gets cleaned out.

we used to do it everytime we bought a used car to clean it out, not knowing what care it had. some would put in one quart with a new oil and filter change and run it 500 miles and then change oil and filter again. i put in two quarts tf and new oil and filter and let it idle 15-30 minutes. the oil came out black. i know it did clean because it was so black when it came out but how much good it did i dont know. it did not seem to hurt. i have not done it for many years and never on a diesel. not alot of help! robert
