I was wondering what the difference between Dextron 3/mercon and the +4 transmission fluid that is supposed to be in our trucks is. Lets say that i had a really good friend with an 04. 5 qc and he did a filter change and fluid change @ 10k and was a moron and didnt check fluid specs and put in the dextron/mercon fluid. He has put around 60 miles on it. Do you think any damage has been done and what should he do. Another complete flush with new filter?I will be more than happy to pass the info on to him. :--)

Yeah Ken I should have figured you or y-knot would have been the first to reply. Thanks for sparing me the tongue lashing. I ran over to the dealer and picked up 20 qt of +4 and another filter and brought over to my buddys garage that has a flush machine. All this because of a transmission line with a temp port. :-laf

You should be ok with your little mix up. The main difference are the base oil composition and the type of friction modifiers it has. Chrysler is like everyone else and do not want to use some elses trademarked products in their vehicles. Dexron is GM, Mercon is Ford and so on.

ATF +4 is a dealer only item. NO ONE has an approval on this type of fluid yet. There are some companies that make a performance claim that they meet this specification. Not True, If the specification was published then we could test and get approvals.

We as well as others have deformulated this product and through IR analysis and other testing have a pretty good gauge on the make up.

Yeah i didnt get to worked up over my little booboo i save it for when i really screw up. As you have stated no one meets the spec so i had to go to the dealer @ $4. 22 a quart.

This changes my mind about A oil or any other oil. I thought the dealer/DC has to supply fluid for free if this is the only place to get it. I'm at 25,000 and looking for change, of transmission fluid that is. haha.
