I just got an '02 3500 4x4 quadcab with an auto trans. My maghytec pan also just came in and was getting ready to change it out when I was told that I could only use mopars atf+4 fluid. Has anyone else any other kind of fluid? The owners manual says when you pull the pan you shoud also adjust the band. Does anyone know the procedure for that? I also ordered the dodge service manual so if it is in there don't worry about the adjustment unless there is a special tip or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Getrdone!

Transmission Fluid

JCarrillo,

I used a transmission fluid manufactured by Lubrication Engineers out of Ft. Worth,Texas. You can buy direct from them. I bought mine at the same place as the MagHyTec pan. I also would like to know about any adjustments that should be made when changing fluid. There are other companys that sell similar

products. Try a search in some of the other forums under transmission fluids. Enjoy your new truck.

Take Care

Mike

I would definitly stick w/atf +4, the brand doesn't matter. I've not seen the +4 around here, the +3 I use in my 99 is only in a few places. How many miles on the truck? Any Bombs? As far as the band adjustment, wait till you get the shop manual it's real easy to follow. Did you order the one listed in the back of the owners manual? I'm glad I did instead of buying a Chilton or other one. The Mopar one is (as they say in the old country) spot on. Just don't get too excited about installing the Mag Hytech pan if it arrives before the manual because you'll be pulling the pan to get at one of the band adjustments - kill two birds - be patient. If you can let the trans drain overnight you'll get more fluid out of it. Do not tighten the bands any tighter than recommended unless you are interested in spending $$$ for a rebuild. Tighter is not better nor is looser - as per instructions is the only way to go. MHO

From what I have read, ATF+4 is a proprietary trans fluid developed by Chrysler and they only recently licensed it to other manufacturers. I looked for it when I got my truck and could not find it anywhere but at the dealer.

When I bought the truck last week it had 87,600. I already put 2,000 miles on it. They add up quick. I bought the manual (mopar)from genos along with all my guages, pods, and a couple of other goodies. I also bought a 4" down pipe. I plan on running it staight out with a 4" or 5" stack. I priced the afe stage II air filter assy. That thing is mega bucks. I only plan on going to 300 or 350 hp. I am not sure whether or not I need it. What does removing the silencer ring do? It looks like it would do more harm than good. I appreciate all the input. Thanks !

There is no drain in the factory converter. I don't know about aftermarket ones.

I have been using common old Dexron III in the 01. 5 for over 100k miles without a problem. I read some time ago on this site to add a little 5W-30 FULL SYNTHETIC motor oil to the Dexron as an additive... makes it shift more like factory and helps keep the seals soft. I add one quart oil and the rest ATF at every change. I change the oil every 15k and the filter every 3-4 oil changes.

ATF+4 does not exist where I live in central Mexico. Guess what EVERYONE runs down here? Yes, the ATF+4 is what the factory recommends... but how many of us make non factory modifications to our trucks and like our version better than what Dodge built?
