I know that the only ATF recommended for the 47 series transmissions is the 7176 +3 & +4, but on another website, a transmission repair person was touting the benefits of a hydraulic fluid (AW32) being superior to the ATF. Has anyone used this and had either good or bad results? Anything that could make these fusible links (transmissions) last longer would be a blessing.

I would consider giving Bill Kondolay at DTT a call. He would give you the straight scoop. I don't know his number off hand, but you can find it in this forum real easy. Do a search under transmissions and his name and number will show up. Maybe someone else will chime in that knows how to paste a link for DTT.

I was advised to use Dextron 3. The ATF+ stuff is ok, though not necessary as it is only required in some Chrysler mini van trannies, but Chrysler wanted a universal fluid for their fleet so recommend it. Dextron 3 is about 1 buck cheaper per quart.

I thought I had read in this forum before, that the Dexron III was a no-no except in extreme emergencies, or is it some hype by Chrysler to sell their ATF? I know through the dealer, the 7176 is pretty pricey but cheap if it keeps them running! I appreciate the comments, but I guess no one has tried the AW32.

Transmission fluid is around an 8 weight oil. Anything with that viscosity will work but some better than others. Some people run Mobil 1 5W-30 and some just add a few quarts of Mobil 1 5W-30. Dave Goerend added several quarts of the Mobil one when he upgraded my 1996 transmission several years ago. He said it lubed the overdrive gears better when towing. Some have had good luck with Amsoil fluid also.

I used Dexron III for 212k trouble free miles on my stock transmission per Bill K's advice.

Now using Dex III plus Lube-Gard per Suncoast's advice in their transmission for 22k.

Mainly towing a 14k pound TT.

In my opinion ATF+3 is a Chrysler ripoff.

Valvoline Dex III at Walmart is 99¢/qt

I should know better but , I use AW32. I will get flamed!!!

It is my experiment.

I have 40,000 miles with it since the rebuild that I did myself.

It was choosen because of the weight factor. time/ miles will show if it was a correct choice. I change it out every 10,000 to 15,000. Trans shifts and acts like it always did, since the change, there are no differences. The only issue is cold weather. When it is 10f or colder, the first shift is delayed. It feels like it should if the fluid is thick.

I feel the fluid is a higher quality. It must be if it can last in heavy equipment under hard use with long intervals of change outs.

AW32 is a 10w/10 oil. AW68 is a 20w/20 oil

I am my own warantee!!!!

P. S. don't mix it with transmission fluid. run it straight.

If you search Bill K's DTT message board you will find an old thread where the DTT crew experimented with hydro and motor oil in their race truck's transmission.

Result was they are back to ATF. The oils were fine as long as the transmission was rebuilt after each race.

I found where they experimented with motor oil in their race truck transmission. The only mention of hydraulic oil I could find was:

"We use hydraulic oil to test and calibrate our valve bodies on our calibration and testing machines. While hydraulic oil is actually better for higher temps and firmer shifts it lacks the detergent capabilities of the ATF.

Also a severe shuddering when lock up applies is another issue. "

This, of course, makes me wonder about the kind of hydraulic oil he uses.
