ATF in a manual??

I have a friend who, against all my recommendations, bought, not only a Ford Powerstroke, but got an auto transmission ta boot!! Well, he wants to know how to service it properly and get 200k miles out of it like my father-in-law with his '94 correctly valved/pumped CTD.

First I told him, "do what I did, drop that hunk-a-shift-for-me metal and put in a 5sp!" Didn't like that, too much work.

So then I told him, well, my father-in-law flushes his every year and that old mopar piece of junk shifts as strong as it did on the showroom floor 10 years ago.

Now, a couple of posts have discusses this, even so far as to differentiate between a "flush" involving chemicals and pumping the fluid out with a machine to get a more thorough oil change.

I know that changing the filter, torqueing the bands and going with Amsoil and a deep pan are also good things, but what do yall think about the pumping method? Many shops do it, my father-in-law swears its the answer to his prayers and he has the 10 year old transmission to prove it. A Dodge transmission even!!!
